LEXAPRO MORNINGS

I've been on LEX for 5months @ 5MG before bedtime once  a day. I got myself into a big depression a year ago due a legal lawsuit which I thought was going to ruin my life and business. My GP DR. put me on ZOLOFT which worked for 4 months but then I started acting crazy. I couldn't take any kind of confrontation, I would just plain lost it. Some of my co workers liked me this way because I was really letting people have what they deserve, but it was more like uncontrollable anger. I wanted to fight with everyone. It was like being on speed I was very volatile. So I took myself off the Zoloft. I though I was cured but 4 months later I started I started getting symptoms of depression. Worrying.wishing I would die,wanting to be someone else, When I would read the paper I thouht that the people who got killed were actually lucky like really lucky. Plus all the other sign of a big D were started to creep back in but worse than the 1st time. My Dr. said to give Paxil a ride but that was like death. SLEEP SLEEP SLEEP. So now Lexapro which has worked very good in most respects but I feel hungover medicated and dopey all morning. Around noon i feel great but still feel unmotivated with a degree of apathy in my business which is not good. Is this now how my life is going to be. Just say no to being depressed but yes to these side effects of no motivation. Any ideas or support will go a long way-please. Just a TAD of a reply

will do. I even retyped to make it easier to read. Can anyone relate to the hangover effect?Although it is better than wanting to windsurf 100 miles off the beach.Thanks

Why dont you try taking the lex earlier in the evening?  If you are taking it at  bedtime and only have the hangover in the morning, then it should adjust if  you take it say after work, or with dinner. It could be just enough to have lost the hangover effect by the time you wake up.

ssri's can give you apathy. You need to consider that a trade-off for not having the pits of despair depression. However that should continue to improve (I know its been 5 months already).

Try not to get too frustrated, and you said, it IS working, you do not want to mess up a good thing that you may continue to improve on.

CC~

PS please dont use all CAPS, it is so hard on the eyes. ;)

From what I have heard SSRIs will not do much for motivation, at least not Lexapro.  That is definitely true in my case.  My depression is almost gone but I'm just as lazy as ever.  If you are looking for motivation maybe you could either switch to Wellbutrin or add it on to the Lexapro depending on how well the Lexapro is working for you.  I'm not experienced with Wellbutrin though so I can't promise you will become more motivated.  It's all a crapshoot really.

I take my Lex in the morning mainly because it kept me from sleeping well if I took it before bedtime.  Your 5 mg doseage is pretty low, I only take 10 mg and thats considered low.  So like me you may be very responsive to this med just with different results.  Are you sleeping well at nights?  I started taking 1/4 of 50 mg trazadone to help me sleep and I feel so much better during the day with a good nights sleep behind me.

I also own my own business and the apathy you speak of balanced my stress and anxiety so it was more manageable.  If your not happy or concerned about your side effects I wouldn't hesitate one second to pick up the phone and call your doctor.  Thats what we pay them for is what I say.

Good luck and I hear ya.

What they said.

You're paying your doc to feel better.  If you're feeling like crap in any regard, they are not doing their job.

If you've tried several meds without great results, it would likely save you time and money in the long run to see a psychiatrist and not just rely on your GP for meds.

Back again. Thank you all repliers. I think just taking the med at dinner helps. But last night I woke up at 3am for about 30 min. No big deal. Easy Q - IS being extra groggy in the the morning a normal deal with srri ? I hate to switch and find something worse. Maybe I should take a sleeping aid. Velvet Elvis if this is my only problem should i just deal with it. I wanted to take wellbutrin but Gdoc said it was not good far GAD. Who are they? Sounds too official.

GAD = Generalized Anxiety Disorder.
