OTC Allergy Medications + AC's...I can't win

Recommended Posts

Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride = NO good for ashl3igh.

Loratadine = doesnt work worth shit; never has.

I decided to try Sinutab (Pseudoephedrine).  I figured that i would be either climbing the walls or go a little hypo.

My allergies were so bad last night.  i count a total of 86 sneezes yesterday - and the stuffed up nostrils where NOTHING would drain them, and i couldnt bend over because they would pour out like a tap.

result?  went hypo - cleaned the entire kitchen, did 4 loads of laundry and then decided i was going to throw out the majority of my clothes (desperately needed to do so), and it REALLY helped my allergies.

in the past (before being medicated) i had always used regular ephedrine as an allergy medication (5mg).  i found that it helped better than anything, but i couldnt handle the palpitations and horrid agitation.

now that im taking my lamictal and topamax - im really scared of trying it again.  and to boot, PRETTY sure its not a good idea.

my allergies were awful again this morning, so i popped two more sinutab before leaving for work.  by the time i got here, the mania set in so bad i ended up whipping my coffee off the picnic bench and started freaking on my fellow employees - and i can barely remember what i was saying to them.  took some xanax and 50mg of topamax and i feel SO much better.

topamax = my WONDER drug.

could there be ANYTHING out there that will ever help me?!?

im running out of options. im also scared of getting addicted to afrin - which is the only nasal spray that works and extremely hard to find in most drug stores here in Canada.

im going to go through with allergy testing and get some more shots made up - and actually get them this year.  HOPEFULLY i wont have them nearly as bad next week.

Zyrtec is supposed to be helpful without any of the mania worries. I have heard people say it works for them. You do have to have an Rx though, at least in the U.S.

Do try your best to stay away from the Afrin, a few days in a row is use per the instructions. I know several people who have become addicted to nasal sprays and it can get ugly.

I can sympathize, I have horrible allergies and they are giving me a tough time lately. I have never taken anything that really, really made things better. I did try Flonase spray for a while but you need to take it evreyday and it is best as a preventative, which of course does not do shit when you are in the midst of an episode and are just starting it. Plus it is expensive.

Maybe try Zyrtec? And waut to see what other people come along and have to add.

I have been using Zyrtec for awhile now and Allegra before that.  Neither seemed to push me into mania.  Zyrtec has been pretty benign for me.  Haven't gotten it refilled lately cuz I have been spending so much on therapy and meds, but once the allergies kick back in, I will be running to the pharmacy for more.

None of the OTC stuff has ever worked for me.  Especially not Sudafed or whatever it is called these days.  Bad stuff.  Stay away from it.

ive decided to deal with the allergies until this fall and then go in for shots.  whatever - theyre about 150$ (ive bought them before and never gone through with them...) because id also like to see whats changed and see if ive developed more severe allergies  <_<

thanks for your suggestions.

i attempted sinutab <--- BAD idea. well...as long as i religiously take my current meds (lamictal/topamax/xanax) i only get to a hypo-manic state while on it...

it STILL kinda makes me want to gnaw my own hands off.

I found some stuff called Hista Block at a herbal store. She says it works great. Do you think there would be any manic reactions or interactions with bipolar meds?

I already told ashl3igh this in chat, but just in case someone else goes looking for this thread:  I'm Bipolar NOS and OCD (as well as some fun panic/anxiety) and Rynatan (US brand name) or R-tanna (US generic) works for me.  Composition per tablet:

Phenylephrine Tannate 25 mg

Chlorpheniramine Tannate 8 mg

Pyrilamine Tannate 25 mg

I take a half tab TID, which is below the max dose of 1 tab QID for adults.

Ever since I went through severe paxil withdrawal I can't take any oral antihistamines, but I can take the allergy sprays like flonase, nasacort etc etc. because they don't have an antihistamine in them.  They take about a week to really get in your system and don't have the rebound affect of those over the counter allergy sprays like afrin.  I would really reccommend trying one.

Hey there,

Pseudoephedrine is a decongestant, compared to diphenhy...you know, which is an antihistamine.  Manic/hyper/exited reactions are fairly common with decongestants.

Recently, I've added a prescription nasal spray called Astelin, which has really helped with the dribbly nose syndrome.  I use it twice a day, and haven't noticed any real problems. Maybe it would help.

Good luck.
