Guest Sharonmw23
I was just prescribed Lexapro today by my family doctor. I had to go to her for a while until I find a new pdoc, and I am not sure that is such a good idea. I am already on Topamax 50mg, and I just stopped taking Symbax. After some research, I have read that Lexapro can cause mania- not something I want since I am Bipolar II. I tried to tell her that I needed something different, but she prescribed it anyway. I am afraid to take it. Any experience with this?

flydamsel
I am bipolar II as well, and let me tell you that from my experience, Lexapro was no fun. I was prescribed it initiatially after being incorrectly diagnosed by a psydoc as clinically depressed, and within two weeks, I was more manic than I had ever been in my more "normal" bipolar II hypomania. I was driving like a maniac, on the edge of rage 24/7 and in a very bad place. This was just my experience, but if I were you, I'd get a second opinion from an actual psychiatrist before you start taking Lexapro.
MoparGuy1991
I have some extensive experiences with this. On my second trial of Lexapro, I got a manic reaction from hell. It was wayyy more obvious when my doctor decided to mix it with Geodon! I read on here that Geodon + Celexa (where Lexapro is derived from) = Manic as Hell! But he didn't know this. Anyway, I was already on Lexapro and Geodon for several weeks by the time I started Topamax for mood stabilizer (which has a slow titration). I was wound up all the time. I talked talked talked talked pressurely. I felt euphoric, charged up, and excitation. I drove erratically at times and blew horns at drivers. Others seemed slow. I had flights of ideas. Eventually, it progressed to dysphoric mania. I started to get bitter towards others. I was rude and very argumentative. And the worst: I drove dangerously in a parking lot one night out of anger due to what someone said. Then next night, I got verbally abusive. Topamax was raised next day right from 100mg to 200mg, and it quelled that mania well. I tried some other SSRI's after that w/ some similar results. I'm never taking them again! I recently took Luvox, and it worsened some symptoms few weeks into trial, and I stopped it right away before it got worse.
synthetic
I too was incorrectly diagnosed as suffering from plain old depression and was given Lexapro by my family doc. I made the mistake of taking 10mg the first day. Within 24 hours I was in mixed-state hell. Not fun. You don't want to be there. I would talk to your family doc about your concerns. They are definately valid. I personally would fall on the side of caution. If you want to try the Lexapro, take the smallest dose you can. You can usually split pills and take half the dose. But I ain't a doctor, so don't take my work for it. Bring it up with your doc and if you don't want to take the Lexapro, make that clear to her. Most docs will go with what you want if you feel strongly about it. If she isn't willing to listen to your concerns, find another doctor.
Guest Stacy
I second what everyone else is saying here. My physician put me on Lexapro for depression, but also never asked me about mania. After 3 days of the Lex, I was a mess. I walked back into the physicians office in a horribly manic state (I am surprised they didn't put me in the hospital at that poiint) and was put on Wellbutrin. So far so good. I have not been "officialy" diagnosed with BP, but after doing lots of research and really looking back at my behavior, I am pretty sure that si what is going on.
