1 mg xanax to help sleep - couldn't sleep last night

Recommended Posts

So please tell me someone that I'm not the only one who does this: I started falling asleep around 9 - kept myself awake (barely) til 10 so I could take my other Depakote and my xanax - got into bed and thought what if the xanax doesn't help me sleep, then what. So of course...I tossed and turned til 12:30, took another .5 xanax and slept til 5. Of course I feel like dog meat and have to somehow drag myself to work. BTW Insomnia for me = very very dark thoughts so it's not a good thing for me.

I feel both like a failure for doing that to myself and I feel like giving up, that this cycle of torture I put myself through won't stop this time. The "I can't sleep, nothing will help, I'd rather be dead" torture.

Help someone?

Xanax can sometimes help you fall asleep, but it's not meant to be used as a sleep aid. Also, the more you take it, the less effective it becomes. It's not really surprising that you couldn't sleep.

Have you tried things like Lunesta, Sonata, Ambien, Seroquel?

Thanks for your reply. I haven't tried any of the others except Seroquel once. It did seem to work. I tend to get an anxious thought in my head that I won't be able to sleep - hence not sleep. THAT's what makes me think I'm crazy. I can't seem to get THOSE types of thoughts out of my head. I see the doctor Thursday and maybe she will suggest Seroquel which I probably need anyway. I'm getting my Zoloft level back to 150 mg. a day which is where I was before my Lamictal "crash".

I do the same.... I make myself anxious worrying that I won't sleep. Which does not help and causes me not to be able to sleep. I take seroquel which does the trick but I still work myself up worrying that it won't so I often take a xanax to calm my nerves so I can sleep. I would definitely ask for something to help you sleep.

I sure would like to know why we do this and how to stop it. It's what got me started on meds in the first place. Like things are going okay, not a big deal, sleeps okay and then like your brain flips this switch and says what if...and then the cycle starts. I just want to know how to counter it, I've been dealing with this WAY too long. (the cycle that is)

I'm glad the Seroquel worked for you. The pdoc shouldn't have much of a problem rx'ing it for sleep... it's very common.

I get thoughts in my head that I can't get rid of (especially at night). I have to take Trazodone and Elivil to get to sleep now. Oh well, I suppose it can't be helped. The whole relaxing thing just doesn't do it for me.

I don't take xanax at night to make me tired, I take it to quiet all the thoughts in my brain that are going 1000 miles an hour that would stop and won't quiet down so I can sleep. There's nothing like laying down in bed and having visions of fourteen different things in the span of 10 minutes, hear a couple of songs playing in the background, have a brain zap or two, and hear things that you aren't sure are the result of your super-spidey sense of hearing - or just your brain making them up.

I have the same problem with worrying about not sleeping. Cause if I sit there and don't sleep, I generally worry. Then I worry about not sleeping, and just spirals downhill. I prefer to knock myself out cold before even going to my bed. Usually Seroquel does this, but not always.

I will take ativan too to put me to sleep if it gets bad, and ya I get a hangover the next day from doing it, and I hate doing it because then I feel dependant on it to sleep.

As far as I understand it, different psychiatrists have different feelings related to benzos and sleep. I'm actually using a benzo on a regular basis right now for sleep issues - Halcion (in its generic form, triazolam). It's an anxiolytic, so it shuts my brain up, but I think it's usually prescribed as a sedative. Because benzos are anti-anxiety drugs, they can handle the insomnia panic/train rush of thoughts that keeps people from sleeping.

I don't know of any websites off the top of my head (maybe webmd?), but research for sleep tips might help. Before drugs, which are necessary now, I used progressive muscle relaxation and/or counting backwards from 100. Giving my brain something else to focus on helped for a period of time. That said, I'm a big believer that occasionally the natural stuff isn't enough.

Your psychiatrist should have ideas--there are lots out there. Seroquel is a typical one, as mentioned--and I've used risperdal before b/c it caused less of the hangover effect for me.

Don't take Tylenol for sleep.. it's bad for your liver. If you want to use a PM pain med, stick with Advil. Neither are good for long-term sleep issues however.

Tylenol is safe for the liver as long as you don't take over the prescribed amounts.

I have tried them all.....but I know that I need to mentally get in a better state of mind so that I don't need sleeping pills....but when I am at my best, 1/2 of a Unisom works for me. When not at my best, I need Ambien, or 1/2 an Ambien...but I try not to use my Xanax unless something works my nerves....

Worst thing about Seroquel is the side effect of restless-leg, which, of course, keeps me awake.....cussing.gif

I agree with a previous poster - I take Xanax at bedtime to turn off the 'static' in my brain. To illustrate, my brain before bed is like being in a casino and watching every TV news station broadcasting depressing stories...without Xanax it's very difficult for me to relax! Doesn't make me too sleepy, but I do get sleepy when I'm able to relay...make sense? I take Xanax during the day too, and don't get tired.

I think a lot of sleep problems stem from the "can't shut my brain up" phenomenon as soon as you lay down. My take on it is this - during the day, we have plenty to distract ourselves from the incessant crap our brains are churning out, but when we lay down to sleep, no distractions, peace, quiet... it seems all the louder and we have nothing to detract from it.

So... things I've tried? Listening to soothing and relaxing music until you fall asleep (leaving it running if it won't disturb you or anyone else later in the night), having a half-hour session in bed (BEFORE you want to try to sleep) writing down what is actually in your head, like a brainstorming session. Doesn't matter if it makes sense, just write what you think as you think it.

Um... sleep meds, obviously, are great if you can avoid becoming dependant on them. But I guess you would have some idea about that, having been prescribed xanax, it's a similar deal.

Alcohol makes you pass out, not fall asleep. And the sleep you eventually get is so low quality, disturbed, never reaching that restful state needed for recovery, that you'd probably be better off only sleeping 5 hours or whatever sober.

Ironic that worrying about not being able to sleep makes you not able to sleep, ain't it?!

Hope the xanax will turn out to be helpful.

All the best

hey gizmo and everyone im starting to take xanax xr for fears/anxiety. It takes away the fears/anxiety but I have just been on it for a week or two and i awake during the night sometimes at around 430 or 500 oclock. Im not rested at all i just wanna lay there and go back to sleep. I start hearing things like weird noises, the ice maker going off, my name bein said, and sometimes music and throbbing in my ear which only happens during the night and not at all during the day. I know now xanax can be a result of the throbbin(blood pumping feeling) in your ears or head. I know by reading up and hearing from doctors that depression can cause you to hear things. Im also sick at the moment have swelling of sinuses and drainage which can cause depression/fatigue. So does any intellegent people have any answers bc this is a recent thing but the sinus infection has been goin on for two months nearly and i wanna know if its more likely the xanax making me hear the things during the night or my sinus infection drivin me crazy or making my condition worse?
