Neck and jaw stiffness, mouth in an almost constant smirk on right side

Recommended Posts

Around 3 weeks ago I noticed that the right side of my neck felt really tight and it felt like I couldn't move it as well. I disregarded it to not sleeping well on my pillow and didn't bring it up with my pdoc.

Well, it's still doing it and it's gotten worse. Now my mouth is effected- it's like the right side can never rest and it wants to rest in a smirk. Eating has been hard at times because it was hard to chew.

I called my pdoc but she's out all week with a fever the receptionist said. I called the doctor on call with my pcp and he pretty much said there was nothing he could do. I didn't take my Saphris tonight (I'm restless because of it- even my Ambien CR didn't keep me asleep) and took two Benadryls (I had read the possibility of those helping due to the anticholinergic effects)

I know Saphris has a high chance of messing with your muscles. I also read several cases where Vyvanse caused people to have stiff necks. Any help/ insight is appreciated. This bums me out so bad seeing how I've tried pretty much everything and I'm running out of options.

I think this is something you should visit your GP about - it could be TMJ or something else unrelated to your meds.

TMJ is a problem with the joint where your jaw joins your skull, and can cause facial/neck pain, stiffness, etc. I had it fairly bad once and found that putting a damp heating pad on my pillow and then laying on the affected side for half an hour or so a few times a day helped alot.

I'm sure there are other things that this could be as well that a regular doc could help you with.

It's not really terribly likely, but the kind of symptoms you're describing could be related to TD, which is usually caused by AP's, and so might not be something a PCP is terribly familiar with. Is there anyone covering for your pdoc?

The thing is, I don't think it's all that likely what you've got going on is tardive dyskinesia, but it's serious enough that I'd want to be seen by a doctor ASAP, in your position.

Well, Pdoc finally got a hold of me and called me in some Cogentin. By that time it had been 3 or 4 days without taking my Saphris. The muscle rigidity and mouth tightness was still there, but had subsided some from not taking the Saphris. When I got my Cogentin I got back on Saphris.

But when I saw her I told her I didn't want to be on Cogentin forever so we're trying Seroquel XR again- this time we're going to titrate up to a higher dose.

Oh, and yeah TMJ sucks, I've had that problem since high school. I called my GP and his response was that he wasn't familiar with the drug and to talk to my pdoc. He wasn't even wanting to try to touch it since it was psych med related.
