hey, I'm currently on Zyprexa, just started 3 days and it's had a big impact pretty fast. I'm taking it to help control intrusive/obsessive thoughts.

Anyhow just wanted to hear others opinions on it, why or why not to take it, why you took it. I hear it can cause weight gain, but I figure all APs increase appetite to a certain extent.

It's kind of been a mindfuck since I started it, but so have the past 6 months for me.

I was on zyprexa for several years and gained 50 lbs. even though I was soo careful about what I ate. Now I'm having to switch to geodon because of the weight thing. I'm hoping I can shed some of those pounds now, with diet and exercise, of course. But as far as keeping me stable, yeah, nothing was as effective as zyprexa. and I had tried abilify, and seroquel.

I love zyprexa like Nancy Spungeon loved heroin. But I did not love the 40lbs I gained in about a month on zyprexa, so, for me, it's only an emergency med. It works really, really, well though, and not everyone gets the weight gain, so just wait and see what happens, since it sounds like it's working for you so far.

I take Zyprexa every day and its been so helpful to me...the world is a much less scary place when I take it. Yes, it causes weight gain (I gained 40 pounds at first) but you can take it off...I've lost 12 pounds since I started dieting. All things considered, this drug is great, at least for me.

FYI (and I feel like I add this little disclaimer to every thread about Zyprexa) weight gain is not guaranteed. I have never gained weight nor felt extra hungry/had food cravings on Zyprexa. I don't take it chronically, but have taken it for seasonal mania for several years and other symptom exacerbations. And yes it works awesome. I don't like the sedation, but whatever.

According to your other thread the nurse prescribed it for psychosis ?

It's no surprise that it's had a big impact.

But if you don't need it for psychosis, a different antipsychotic or a lower dose of Zyprexa may be more appropriate.

As a class antipsychotics have their negative side effects.

Zyprexa is notorious for weight gain and metabolic disorders.

There are many treatments for OCD.

Other antipsychotics may be a better choice. Or a lower dose of Zyprexa.

Given that the zyprexa seems to be working for whatever exactly it's meant to do, Bribarian's on a low dosage as it is, and is not thus far experiencing problematic side effects, I'm not at all sure why you'd recommend he make a change.
