I'm 44 years old and was diagnosed about 5 years ago with Bipolar. Just dx with OCD (not serious). Although we can trace them both back to about when I was 12 or 13. Before bipolar diagnosis I was dx with depression, anxiety and a variety of other things over the years. As I've gotten older I've gotten increasingly worse. From bipolar 2 to bipolar 1. I can no longer work and have been in the hospital 4 times in 3 years and one outpatient program (total waste of time and money for me, except for the people). As a former bulimic I refuse to take any meds that will make me gain weight so I know I may be limiting myself in symptom relief but for me I know I would't take it. Also, can't take antidepressant; they totally flip me out, make me Severely manic. I totally believe in the kindling theory. I'm doing the best I can with what I have. Rx: 600 mg tegretol; 250mg lamictal and .25mg klonopin 3/day. Married at least til he throws me out; 3 kids who are currently having trouble dealing with me as they get older. That's me! It can be a hard trade-off between side effects of meds, including weight gain, and the help they provide. That said, everyone reacts differently to different medications - have you tried meds and found the weight gain unacceptable, or are you ruling them out if weight gain is a possible side effect? You should check out chat or the blogs sometime if you're into that kind of thing [both links are located at the top of the boards]. They are both a good way to get to know members of CB.
