have no choice but to be on this old ap

Recommended Posts

i have tried the following antipsychotics: risperidone, zyprexa, seroquel, solian, abilify, clozapine, invega, zeldox(geodon), haloperidol, largactil, clopixol. so basically all of the new ones and some of the old ones. saphris and fanapt arent available in my country yet(aus). none have worked for my paranoid schizophrenia except the one im on now which is flupenthixol 40mg injections every two weeks! which is an old school ap. the only problem is that i feel restless. its not that i have to get up and move its more fidgity on the spot. i cant stand still i sway from side to side. i wouldnt describe it as severe but probably mild. ive tried 2mg of cogentin but that didnt do anything but make my mouth dry! lol. i was on that for 2 weeks. i heard from another post that you can use a drug called artane which is like cogentin? can i use artane for this restlessness? i dont see my pdoc for another 2 weeks thats why i thought i would ask here first. ill bring it up when i see him but i would like to get some answers before i see him so i have some idea of what artane can do for me? has anyone else had much success with artane for restlessness?

I've heard Artane can be used but have no experience of it - just a question re: Cogentin - was a dosage increase of it considered to see if there was any effectiveness at a higher dose?

according to my pdoc most of his patients who experience this sort of thing with antipsychotics and take cogentin only take 1mg! he said 2mg is a high dose? another thing is artane also used for extrapyrimdal symptoms?

I had a pharmacist tell me 2mg was a low dose....but maybe she was thinking if you actually had Parkinson's? I was started at 2mg. I am pretty sure though that at the hospital they gave me 4mg. I'd ask about Artane but maybe also if a higher dose of Cogentin is possible....though if it wasn't helping at all at 2mg maybe it's not worth trying a higher dose.

When I had to go on some heavy antipsychotics back then. Risperadol was the one I was on when this happened but I remeber that one of my side effects was shaking and basically how you've described what your going through. I was taken off the risperadol for 1 week and given 2mg of cogentin and the symptoms went away. I was then put back on the risperadol and the symptoms didn't return. They told me that this is common when you have too much neuroleptics in your system.
