why wont this pdoc stop my xanax?

Recommended Posts

saw my pdoc about 4 weeks ago prescribed me xanax 1mg three times a day coz i was stressing out and flipping out due to schizophrenia. it helps a little bit but now my main problem from it is that its causing memory problems. i would forget consistently where i put things. like the tv remote my mobile phone my wallet, my house keys etc etc. i would also forget what i meant to say when im talking to people. so i saw my pdoc 2 weeks ago and complained about the memory thing i asked him if I can just take it as a PRN and he said "No" we will reduce it to 0.5mg three times a day. even now my memory is still shocking. so i called my pdoc today and told him what was going on with the xanax and if we can stop it. again he said "No, hang in there till next time i see you" which is next monday. is the 0.5mg a big dose of xanax? is xanax well known for causing memory problems? what could be the reason for him not wanting to stop it? thank you!

0.5 is NOT a high dose. Not at all. You have to taper down from Xanax. Not good to just quit. You can have withdrawals and more anxiety than you have now. I took a certain dose for 4 years. When I tapered down it took me two months. I think your doctor is trying to prevent needless suffering. Do you see him Monday, tomorrow. Or Monday in a week? Xanax can cause memory problems. But so can antipsychotics and mood stabilizers. I think most psyche medications can affect memory. So does crazyness. Episodes of mania or psychosis can damage the memory.

Given your serious condition you and your doctor have to be careful about med changes. I'm sure you could tolerate these side effects for a week ?

First you were taking 3 mg a day. Now 1.5 mg a day.

Xanax is a potent drug. 1.5 mg is not a low dose. According to the equivalence charts, 1.5 mg is equivalent to 30 mg of diazepam/Valium. Which does not mean it is 'the same'.

So it's possible that the Xanax causes memory problems.

You're also taking other medications I presume, and there may be interactions/additive effects.

Xanax 3 times a day, every day, is probably not a good idea. If you need to take a benzodiazepine there are alternatives to 'popping' Xanax three times a day. Perhaps clonazepam, which can be taken once or twice a day.

Lots of options. Personally I'm biased against lorazepam/Ativan.

Umm... If you are biased AGAINST lorazepam/Ativan what would that have to do with xanax/Alprazolam?
