Is 50mg of Seroquel going to do anything?

Recommended Posts

Hey, wondering if you could help me here. As I was previously discussing in another thread, my doctor won't prescribe me mood stabilisers because he's worried about the possibility of pregnancy (which is a conversation for another day). He therefore put me on 2.5mg of Zyprexa, later raised to 5mg. I hated this. It made me really depressed. I went back to him and he switched me to 50mg of Seroquel. From what I've seen here this is a tiny dose. I was wondering whether a dose this small would actually ever help me?

Thanks.

Well, it will help you sleep, but that's about it.

I don't know exactly what your situation is, but we definitely have members who have successfully completed pregnancies while on mood stabilizers/AAP's/AC's.

Not taken Seroquel myself but my impression is that 50mg = glorified sleeping pill. I think the usual therapeutic dosage for mood/psychosis/etc. starts at around 300mg-400mg, feel free to correct me ;)

I was on Zyprexa. Didn't like it. Felt really tired and apathetic about everything. I don't like this stuff either - I'm just tired all the time. I'm sleeping 12 hours a day and when I'm awake I still feel shit.

;) Okay. It's decided. I've got to go back to my GP and try get a different psychiatrist.

Thanks guys!

As a person who has taken of hard-ass high doses of antipsychotics like Zyprexa and Risperidone, I was surprised when I first took 50mg of Seroquel (last night). It is prescribed as a PRN rage-abortive (essentially). I have taken 40 mg of Zyprexa at once before just to put things in perspective (talk about EPS city).

It really did calm me down and gently relaxed me. It definitely didn't feel like an antipsychotic. More of a benzo feel, but more "Friendly" if that makes sense. I have always had in my mind that since Seroquel binds to D2 so poorly, that it was a useless med, but something about it other than the D2 (maybe the alpha-adrenaline?) makes it useful even to a seasoned antipsychotic veteran like me.
