Suggestions for Lithium and Becoming Ill

Recommended Posts

Been on 900mg for about 1.5mo. Blood levels are at .7 on average and I'm drinking plenty of water, keeping a decent diet, etc.

In the last two days I've felt run down and now my sinuses, ears, and such are giving me trouble and I think I'm getting a cold or sinus infection. I'm not feverish so no worries there, but short of slamming down as much water as possible what can I do to keep my Lithium levels good. I go in tomorrow morning before my am dose to get a more accurate read but I'm a bit apprehensive at what I might find since I've been feeling like crap for a couple days.

Can I take Vitamin C/Echinecea/etc to help boost my immune system? If it does get to an antibiotic stage (which I doubt since I have a strong immune system) will any of the normal antibiotics interfere with Lithium or cause a serum spike?

As far as I know, a cold isn't going to affect your lithium level. Neither should taking vitamin C, etc.

So is it more if you have a fever and become dehydrated? I know it's all about fluid/salt volume, but I'm just taking precautions.

The danger is dehydration. The flu with vomiting and diarrhea is a problem. But just a cold is not an issue. Just maintain your fluids. Also your Lith level is not very high. 0.7 is on the low side when the scale is 0.5 - 1.5 . Also non-steroidal anti-inflammatories can also increase your Lithium level.

My voice of reason, as always ;)

I'm running .7 when I test mid-day. My doctor wants me to come in tomorrow morning before my am dose to get a more accurate reading. It'll be interesting to see where I'm at. I'll keep drinking water as normal, thanks for the 411.

6un,

I have had several doctors tell me that the most accurate testing is 12 hours from the dose. 9 pm dose and a 9 am stick. Hope your cold is better.

I do the same, Just so the testing is consistent month to month. I recently had a chest infection, and apart from increasing my water intake there was no change really.

My tests from the other day show I'm at .6 which the doctor says is a bit low. This was a 12-hour post-dose test so it was pretty accurate. I've been drinking water like crazy and my salt has been pretty high so that might explain it. He wants me to increase by 150mg in the morning if I'm still seeing breakthrough symptoms. Finally getting over this cold mess.
