NuttyJoe
We all know that SSRIs basically work by recycling serotonin and the only way to get serotonin is food right? What happens if you take an SSRI and don't eat? I ask because I've been dieting (one place OCD comes in handy) and I've lost some weight, but I've also felt, well "weird"
LunaRufina
What happens if you feel "weird" and than don't eat? Don't you feel weirder? WTF do you mean by weird? You're going to have to be a little more specific than that.

You're going to have to be a little more specific than that. I feel more anxious, and weird heh, I feel different, like I'm not on an AD. I was wondering if by not eating as much that could cause anxiety, or maybe even render the AD I'm on useless.
Alien.
What happens if you take an SSRI and don't eat? At all?! You waste away and die. Forgive me, I've had problems with eating before (bulimia) so I may be projecting myself onto you by being concerned by your eating habits, but what?! do you NEED to lose weight? [what's your BMI if you don't mind?] If you don't like feeling "weird", maybe returning to your old diet might be the answer. I wish you luck. Anyway, this could be just me being weird and projecting my problems onto someone else, so ignore it if it is. Sorry. PS I didn't know serotonin came from food? Heh, I actually just assumed they were there anyway. :s
helenllama
PS I didn't know serotonin came from food? Heh, I actually just assumed they were there anyway. :s Serotonin is derived on a pathway from Tryptophan, which is in any protein we eat. (because we can't make it in our body) The other name for it is 5-Hydroxytryptamine
Azk
If you don't eat, you get the symptoms of brain not having enough fuel: lethargy, irritability, headache, etc.... Other then that, taking an SSRI whether or not you eat is pretty much the same. Except you feel like crap and eventually die if you don't eat. Oh, and you'll absorb the pills faster on an empty stomach. Which is meaningless because SSRIs are all about having a mostly-steady level anyway. Kseudonym
I don't know about serotonin specifically, but I know there is evidence that not eating enough can play with your mood... Other than that though, dieting is probably not good for depression or anxiety issues. It's an activity based on the idea that you're defective and need to change, so, not good for sepression or anxiety. It's also an attempt to control the uncontrollable... studies show that it's pretty much impossible to significantly alter your weight by dieting. 2-5 years, it comes back and then some, because dieting messes with your metabolism. So, not good for anxiety or depression at all then. Google 'Heath At Every Size' and use your healthy eating kick to better enjoy the body you have instead of pining after a kind of body you don't have.
