Hey! I'm new to this site. I was recently diagnosed with bipolar II, and for the past year or two it's been more of a mixed state. I've lived with this since highschool but didn't know it. I just thought it was recurring major depression. But as I was researching my youngest son's recent diagnosis - ADHD - I realized what I experience may be more than just depression alone. Apparently, the Pdoc agreed and put me on Lamictal (currently titrating up) and trazadone.

Interestingly, I had researched this before - my mother was diagnosed as bipolar for a while, until a new doctor reversed that diagnosis, and I'm still not sure which one is right. For years, though, my reg docs dismissed my concerns because I don't have classic bipolar I manic symptoms. Finally, I decided to see a specialist, mainly because the mixed state I've been experiencing for the past year or two have been unbearable. So glad I did.

Right now, I'm struggling a little bit to adjust to the realization that I have this. On the one hand, I'm relieved to have an accurate diagnosis and to have hope that these debilitating mood swings can be managed. But I'm a devout christian and while my current church is very reasonable on these things, there are differing opinions in that community as to whether or not this is truly a medical issue or just a sin issue (not enough faith, hope, prayer time, bible study, etc.) The sin philosophy doesn't help me much, especially when I'm in the middle of a guilt-ridden depression. I tried to find a christian pdoc, but there are very few of them, and the only one in my area couldn't see me for months. So, I'm going to start counselling through my church to come to grips with that side of things.

Well, now we can welcome you as a member! Welcome to Crazyboards. I hope you find some good information here.

Be sure to check out the blogs and chat if you would like to talk.

I hope you can get good counseling, but I don't have a high opinion of church people counseling someone who is struggling with bipolar. If they don't have training in psychology, they're just going to tell you to pray some more.
