why are pdocs scared to try a new aap?

Recommended Posts

whenever a new aap hits the market pdocs are careful about using it. they wont prescribe it straight away. they are hesitant to use it. ill give you an example when invega hit the market 2-3 years ago my pdoc refused giving it to me but wouldnt say why? is there something im missing? dont these new aaps get tested by the the fda before they come out? could it be dangerous? is that why?

Since I'm not a pdoc, I'm not totally sure, but I can speculate.

For one thing, the FDA studies don't always catch everything. They tend to be for a relatively short duration, whereas a lot of crazies are on their meds for years. Therefore, some pdocs like to wait a while to make sure nothing nasty comes up post-marketing.

My pdoc, at least, likes to stick with drugs she knows because she is more familiar with the dosing and the side effects. Reading a PI sheet isn't the same as having years of experience seeing various patients use a given drug.

Anyway, I'm not totally sure, but those are some of my conjectures.

I've not run into that, though perhaps they are just not comfortable with something they've not any experience with. I'm currently on Fanapt which is (I think) the newest AAP and it is going well. I think I'm the only patient under my pdocs care who is on it but that didn't seen to deter him from trying it. We just started at the minimum dose and watched what happened. I hope you and your doctor can find something that works.
