Stopping risperdal

Guest marykate

Is it safe to stop riperdal. I have been on 3 mgs for say two months and am going crazy with restlessness and not being able to sit still. I have tried artane and cogentin and neither helped. Its to the point to where im afraid to go to sleep at night becasue of the tossing and turning. So if i stop now what can i expect to feel like or have happen. Im hoping it wont be that bad b/c i have only been on it for a little bit

I don't know if you would get withdrawal from stopping risperdal suddenly. But I wouldn't recommend it. There are other medication options for the restlessness. There's beta blockers, amantadine, and benadryl. There's also switching to a less offensive antipsychotic such as seroquel or zyprexa.

Whatever path you choose I wish you luck.

Andy.

What are you taking it for ? If it's for psychosis or schizophrenia you can't stop cold turkey.

Generally you need to adjust your meds under the care of a competent doctor. pdoc or GP.

The restlessness could be akathisia. Perhaps a different antipsychotic would work ?

If you take Risperdal for some minor issue (but for what minor issue would you take 3 mg ?) you could probably stop.

3 mg for two months shouldn't have created much of a dependency on Risperdal, assuming you've never taken an antipsychotic before.

If you stop taking Risperdal cold turkey you could experience a very serious relapse of what it was prescibed for. Psychosis ?

Really, you should discuss this with a doctor.
