Adderall for 11 years, now what

Recommended Posts

I have taken Adderall (either IR or XR or any combo of the two) since 1999. I am currently taking 60mg of XR and 15 mg of IR. This is not effective for me anymore. I don't know what medication to try next? Ritilan and Dexadrine made me anxious and emotionaly unstable. I tried Vyvanse, it did not work for me. The only other option is the Desoxyn. I know doctors don't like to RX this medication. Is anyone out there on it? How should I approach my pdoc?

Some people combine therapy for coping strategies for their ADD to go along with medication. Others go on 'medication holidays' from their ADD meds when they become tolerant to their dosage. I've never experienced tolerance to my ADD meds. But I'm no longer prescribed them. Sorry.

Have you tried Strattera or Provigil? I don't know if any pdocs still use Provigil off-label for ADD. Sorry.

Is it not working at all, or just not as much. If it's only partially working, you could talk to your doc about a dose increase.

Otherwise, I think a holiday is in order so you can reset any tolerance you may have developed to it.

I had the same situation. I don't know what dose of Vyvanse you were on, but it only really worked for me when I got up to 80 mg, which is over the limit of the recommended prescription. It ended up working much better than Adderall ever had.

I found a website written by a pdoc who specializes in ADHD relating to his experience with dosage of stimulants in adults. The main point is that it's often necessary to dose above the "maximum" as the approved doses are taken from studies involving children.

[Mods: If it's bad to link to a 3rd party, feel free to slap me with a large trout. I promise not to get too annoyed.]
