NEED HELP DECIDING WHICH MED

Recommended Posts

So here's my situation --- Basically I have tried a lot of different meds before. I have tried ambien, but it makes me weird and i hallucinate and do stuff in my sleep. Tried Lunesta, but it is literally the worst thing ever, 20 minutes later it tastes like someone shit in my mouth and added salt pepper and gatorade, and it lasts for 3 days. I've also tried Xanax, that makes me depressed and angry the next day. My Doctor gave me Vistaril, I hate it...makes me more nervous and very tired. Basically I need something that will really calm my nerves and my mind at night and will knock me out without too much of a hangover the next day. I dont wanna keep drinking wine or beer to do that for me. What should I ask my doctor for? (Sorry for the long post guys)

Yeah, I've tired melatonin. It works when it wants to, but never to the extent it should, and it makes me pee all night long. The antihistamines are not good for me... I just took some tonight with a few glasses of wine....its now 4 hours later, and i am not sleepy at all...maybe just starting to at most. My doctor i think is afraid to prescribe anything that can be addicting.

I think that would be a great idea... but first o would love to try a benzo...bc most of my sleep issues are "night time anxiety" If I don't drink a glass or two of wine or beer, i get very anxious and nervous....its been my medicine for about ten years... but i think my doctor is a major wuss and wont prescribe anything in those classes.

I'd ask your doctor for a sleep study. I went through loads of sleep medicines that didn't help, and it was only after a sleep study identified the precise problems/disorders that I was able to get on the right meds.

Lots more drugs still to try

Klonopin - for anxiety

Seroquel - for insomnia and anxiety

Trazodone - for depression, but well known for sedation

Halcion (triazolam) - benzo sleeping pill (popular before Ambien)

Once you get to sleep, do you stay asleep, or do you wake up a lot during the night? Or wake up early?

Melatonin doesn't really work when anxiety is the problem, it's best when you can't fall asleep because your body doesn't think it's bedtime yet. I personally find Klonopin non-drowsy, my suggestion would be Ativan.

Be careful about Halcion, it's known for the same sort of hallucination / sleep behaviours as Ambien.

The antihistamines aren't really sleep meds, the effect doesn't last or you get really wired and anxious instead of sleepy. Personally, I only take an antihistamine if I want an all-nighter.

  • 2 weeks later...

Thank you all for your help. I'm new to this site and I'm impressed with all the helpful replies. I am going to go to my dr. and ask for something for sleep. I will suggest some of the drugs that you guys suggested. My only fear is that he might be reluctant to prescribe any controlled substance as he knows I have a history of pain pill abuse. But I think it has nothing to do with my sleep issues.
