Does anyone take Saphris? I tried it a few weeks ago, I got sick off the taste and my pdoc had just got some black cherry ones in a week or so ago, so I picked those up and started those yesterday. It stil has a funky taste but not as bad. I am just wondering what other peoples side effects were and how well it did or did not work. Thanks :)

For some reason it made me very anxious, paranoid, and irritable (like that frustrated crying for no reason and screaming at people who haven't done anything). Made me sleep great, but otherwise didn't work for me well. Similar to my effects with Abilify. But I know there are a few people on here that really like Saphris.

Thanks for sharing Koali. It makes me sleepy too, I am only taking it once a day, before bed. I have taken Geodon, Abilify, Seroquel, etc before and they all made me really sleepy and real groggy in the morning, but so far Saphris doesn't have as bad of a groggy effect in the morning. So far I don't think I feel any different.

Sylvan, I hope it works for you too. Thanks! Oh and make sure to get the flavored one, the non flavored is beyond nasty.

You are right, the taste is horrendous! I was on it last December though, before there were flavored ones :( Luckily after a few days the BURN wasn't as bad, but the taste always was. But thankfully it stopped being as bad as the first two times.

Oh boy, just got swapped off Invega to try this stuff. Sounds like it's going to be interesting, to say the least...

If anyone who has taken this has been on Lunesta, can you compare the taste of this stuff to the way liquids taste after a Lunesta? I want to know how awful a taste to brace myself for when I go to take this...I've gotten used to bad-tasting things, having had to take nasty cough syrups and having been on Lunesta, but if this is worse than those, I don't know how well I'll do staying med-compliant.

Just took my first dose of Saphris last night, and HOLY CRAP. Horrendous doesn't even BEGIN to describe the taste! It seriously tasted like someone stuffed a sweaty gym sock full of onions in my mouth! It burned and made my tongue TOTALLY numb for a good while after. Is there ANYTHING you can suggest to drink at the 10-minute after mark that'll kill that horrible aftertaste and stop the tingling? Getting rid of that is going to be a BIG factor in whether I can put up with this stuff once, then twice a day to see if it even has a good effect.

Kind of hoping my doc can get those black cherry ones when this sample box runs out, because....YUCK. Why can't they find a way to make these things in like, meltaway chocolates?

LOL chocolate would be good. I tried the unflavored ones and it made me vomit, there is no word to describe the taste. Ack. I hope you can get the black cherry ones soon. The burning calms down after several days on it, I chug water, then brush my teeth after the 10 min mark. LOL, good luck to you!!!!

So I was just given some samples of Saphris today at the PDOC (ok, a nurse practioner at the PDOC). Anyway, I am glad I was given the black cherry ones because from the sounds of things, I would have really enjoyed the original flavor. The pdoc said it my cause drowsiness. has this happened to anyone? How long after taking the dose does the sleepiness kick in? And is there a lot of grogginess the next day?

Hi Out of the Woods,

It did make me drowsy pretty quick the first several days, maybe 20 mins after taking it and the first few mornings I was a little groggy (NOTHING like some meds I have been on) and now I have been on it for a couple weeks, I am not drowsy in the morning at all (and my kids and pup like to wake up at 6am lol). I was just at the pdoc last night, she increased my Saphris to 10 mg. She gave me more sample too, woohoo, 40 more days without having to pay for a script, lol.

Good luck with it. The first few nights it will burn and tingle your tongue but with time it gets less intense,

Aww, someone else with the black cherry flavor! My pdoc only has the original, so you're lucky! I've been on 5 mg for a week as of yesterday, and it seems to still knock me around pretty hard about 15-20 minutes after. I'm supposed to step up to 5 mg twice a day, but I need to call the doc's office on Friday and make sure it's okay to just take the two 5 mg at night (Oh gawd, twice the burning....YUCK!) instead of morning and night like originally suggested, because I'd wind up getting up, taking the med and going back to bed. Also going to beg for the flavored ones and hope they can find a way to get them...the original really does still taste like onions and gym socks!

The next-morning grogginess is definitely there for the first few days, but it really IS a lot less than some of the other meds I've been on too.

I've also found that drinking some orange juice about 11 minutes after the dose at least saves me from going to bed with the nasty taste and tingle, but it's a LONG 11 minutes.

The 10 mg during the day knocks me out, so I take both at night. Er, I didn't really ask her if I could, because I know she would frown, but I do it anyway. It's finally helped with depression. The hangover is weird in the mornings, I can't wake up, and hit the snooze button continually, but then once I'm up with a cup of coffee, I'm usually good to go.

Well, I took the Saphris last night. The med dissolved instantly and caused my tongue to feel weird and numb for about 30 minutes. About 40minutes after taking it, I began to feel sleepy. Not drowsy and out of it like other meds have in the past though. So I got in to bed and drifted off...

I must have woken up once or twice but I slept for a good 8 hours and I haven't done that in months! To top that off, I didn't feel drowsy today which is good, as my job requires a lot of interaction with individuals and computer systems so I can't really afford to lose the edge.

I am only on 5 mgs at night but will go up to 10 mgs at night on Friday. if all goes well, my pdoc will have me take 5 mgs during the day and 10 mgs at night.

Let's hope this med is the one because lord knows I have been through them all!

Today was my third day with a dose of Saphris in me. I realized today that I have been a bit edgy these last two days and yesterday I know that I was biting off heads and that is definitely not like me. I am pretty sure it is the Saphris as I am not normally like that. I just hope that the edginess wears off. My job relies on my ability to interact in a nice manner with people and I wouldn't want to jeopardize my livelihood.

Anyone experience anything similar?

I have been on Saphris almost 3 wks now and I am normally very short tempered and irritable. I noticed I was more 'calm' within a couple days of taking it but my issue is the 10 days before my period when my PMDD is is full swing and I am snapping all day and so emotional, between Saphris and my Prozac on the new doses I pray next month is better.

So last night, at about 3 AM, I got up to go to the bathroom. So, and not to be giving away too much detail, I was standing there, and I started to feel real dizzy and nauseous. And not just a little bit, but a whole lot. To the point where I thought I was going to vomit and pass out, and not necessarily in that order. So I went right back in bed and laid down. And then I felt better and drifted back off to sleep. Anyone ever have a similar issue?

Yikes. Glad you didn't vomit or pass out! No, never felt like that, and my youngest still wakes up at night and crawls into bed with us and my pup just started sleeping thru the night, I would take her out about 1-2am each night and never had an issue.

Hope it was just a fluke!!!

So, I've been on the Saphris for about 2 weeks now and for the past 3 days I've been getting REALLY agitated and jumpy. I can't tell if it's the Saphris putting the brakes on my mood swings and putting me into an angry manic episode for 3 days (my mood swings are usually a lot shorter) or if the Saphris is causing some kind of adverse reaction. Anyone had that kind of experience with it? If you did, what was the end result? I guess I need to call the pdoc's office Monday, but I don't know whether I should be asking for the next dose up I'm supposed to start this week, something to kill the side effects, or a whole new med. Really confused and having a hard time concentrating.

OK.. well I am officially off Saphris and giving up hope on any mood stabilizer working for me. Last Monday, I started 'manic' feelings, extreme irritabilty, yelling, crying, unable to consentrate, etc. It was horrible. I had an 'emergency' appt with my couselor on Thursday morning and my husband took Thursday off to let me 'get a break' and some rest. I called my doc on Monday and she wasn't sold on it being Saphris.. I took it last Sunday night and I am feeling better already. I was ready to check into the hospital again. This happened with Geodon, I was CRAZY! The others either don't work , made me a walking zombie (Abilify and Seroquel) OR have a bad side effect (Lithium made me super sick, Depakote my blood levels were too high, hair was falling out BAD, etc).

I am glad I feel better but I really am upset that no meds seems to work for my 'mood disorder' My husband told me I was best when on Prozac only than anything else in the last 2 yrs. Doc also increased my Prozac to 40 mg all the time (instead of the 2 wks needed for PMDD).

:wall:

I called my doctor's office as early as I could Monday and spoke with the Nurse Practitioner who handles medication issues. I wound up crashing down into a depression on Sunday, so we came to the conclusion that the Saphris didn't cause an adverse effect, just lengthened the duration of my mood swings. My doctor is out of town until this coming Monday, so she told me to keep track of my moods this week to confirm that's the case and she plans on speaking with my doctor as soon as she can on Monday. So, it's pretty much a holding pattern, and a mixed bag of worms. While the longer mood swings may be a good thing in some books, I'm not happy with the fact that there's still no middle ground. There's so few options left for me, though, that they may consider this a positive outcome and just try adding to my cocktail instead of swapping me to something new. (I guess it doesn't help that I have to go through patient assistance programs and have to process forms that take 4-6 weeks each time I change pills.) I guess I'll find out on Monday what the pdoc thinks of the whole thing.

I am writing about the Saphris. I take 5mg twice daily. It was the only thing that worked in pulling me out of definite mixed episode. I have a strange side effect in that it makes me feel as if I am high on something or have been drinking 2 glasses 0f wine and have a buzz.. I prefer not driving car like this as I feel like I am driving like under the influence. PDOC said this is a different one all right - just waiting for the SAPHRIS to settle in. Only on it 14 days. I know I may be nasty, but I swear I prefer the regular SAPHRIS to the Black Cherry as the regular doesn't continue on forever as a flavor thing in my mouth. I know - strange.

Saphris has been good to me although I fought with my pdoc initially when he wanted me to go on it. I am very concerned about weight gain with antipsychotics given my previous experiences with zyprexa and geodon. With saphris I gained only one pound! The taste is horrible and the tablet made kind of a rough patch in my mouth under my tongue where it dissolves but i did get used to it and then when the black cherry came out it was a real treat. I think it tastes like candy personally. However I'm told by the pharmacy that the black cherry is on manufacturer back order which sucks. My doctor doesn't have any more black cherry samples. I was surprised at how quickly the saphris worked. It took away my hallucinations and paranoia almost immediately and it brought me down from my mania very gently. I find it overly sedating though at times so I go from between 10 and 5 mg depending on where I am at mood wise. Overall I am happy with it. If I must be on an antipsychotic, this is the one I choose.

Just started it recently, and the non-flavored one is terrible. I used to be on Invega as well, but it made me incredibly tired. I couldn't stay awake through most of my therapy sessions, even after reducing the dosage several times. I have yet to have that problem with Saphris. I can guarantee you it is worse than cough syrups and Lunesta, but the effects have been great for me so far.
