persephonelawson
Well....I am currently on 50mg of lamictal (I'm titrating up). I've been on 50mg for about 2 weeks now. My pdoc wants to do this super super slow....4 weeks for every dosage. The first 2 days I felt wonderful ... close to perfect! After that...felt like crap for the next 12 days and then today - TA DAH!!!!!!!!!! FEELING EXHILARATED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I feel energetic, happy, excited, wide eyed, pressured to speak (but keeping it under control), horny. Can this be hypomania???? But...isn't 2 weeks plenty for the new dosage to stabilize?? Isn't 50mg too little to cause an effect??????? Oh and an unrelated question - do auditory hallucinations have a common theme ? Like - alcohol withdrawals make you see bugs and snakes....do all auditory hallucinations have a similar pattern ? Are you supposed to feel bad when you hear them ??? Yesterday I was driving home from work, I had been feeling horrible that afternoon, really depressed and weird and then all of a sudden I heard orchestra tuning...you know, those off key sounds the musicians make before an orchestra performance ???? It lasted about a minute. Could that be a hallucination? The other day, during the shower I heard bells ringing....hmmmm first time in my life though. Starting to get anxious about it. Thanks for listening love P.
netsavy006
I'm not sure what to call it right now, but I would get in touch with your precribing doctor and let him/her know exactly what is going on. I've always heard (but was never on the med myself) that Lamical is more for depression than for mania so it's possible that you could be having a hypomanic reaction to the Lamictal. You may need to be taking another medication (at least for the meantime) until you get to a more stable dose of Lamictal. These are just my thoughts, but do speak with your healthcare professional. Good Luck, Andy.
SashaSue
At the lower dosages especially, lamictal is much more of an antidepressant than a mood stabilizer, so yes, I do think it's possible for it to elicit hypomania in some people. I would say give your pdoc a call, and let him/her know what's going on.
0detta
I had the same thing happen to me at 50 mgs, and it started to level out once I increased the dose again. It's said that hypomania is fairly common with 50 mgs of lamictal, although I haven't seen anything scientific about that, only anecdotal. I'm now at 200 mg, which is said the "magic level" for lamictal, per my pdoc. I do know that the titration packs provided by the drug company have at least 3 stages, and don't stop at 50 mgs, which I infer to mean that 50 mgs is not the dosing level where you need to sit. AnneMarie
Call your pdoc to explain what is going on. Was the music playing inside your head? Music hallucinations are very rarely of psychiatric origin. They are much more common to temporal lobe epilepsy. I'm not suggesting you have TLE! I'm actually suggesting that the probability of hallucination is low. That's just a WAG tied loosely to statistics. Your pdoc needs to make the call and also decide if what you experienced should be checked out by a neurologist.
tazlina
I'm at 50mg of Lamictal too. I'm still in the feeling like crap stage. My doctor did tell me to watch out for hypomania because it's a possibility. I heard bells ringing the other day, but it was Sunday and I was driving past a church at the time. I have no idea if the church has bells (or fake bells), or if it was something else. They sounded kind of muffled.
persephonelawson
Thank you for your replies. I think I am definitely hypomanic or at least becoming hypomanic. My mood is all over the place and I'm getting more and more obnoxious as we speak. I feel like I'm shaking inside and can't really define if this is a good feeling or a bad feeling .... it's so mixed and so weird. I shouldn't be feeling like that while on meds. I'm starting to get worried but at the same time happy for not feeling like crap for a change. I'm really confused. love P.
TheActress
I might be a little late with my reply, but hypomania is often experienced at the 50mg titration stage of Lamictal. I know I got REALLY hypo at 50mg, but I pushed thru to 100 and I am so glad I did. I've found many other reports, messages, and examples of people getting quite hypo at 50. Just try and stick it out, see what 100 does for you and take it from there. When Lamictal works, it really works.
