and i thought seroquel isnt as effective as other antipsychotics for schizophrenia?

Recommended Posts

im on seroquel xr 400mg for schizophrenia. it took about 3 weeks to work BUT god has it worked! i feel like my old self again. a few years ago i was on regular seroquel 1600mg, i know 400mg sounds like a lot but compared to what dose ive been on before its tiny. im looking forward to my pdoc increasing it. the main issue that i want to raise with you is that some psychiatrists have said that seroquel isnt as effective as the other antipsychotics. so after doing some research on the net ive found out that its probably the weakest atypical. its an extremely mild antipsychotic. doesnt block dopamine as hard as the others. so can someone explain how this drug which is weaker than the others is working better than them?

First, the crazymeds page doesn't say that Seroquel is any less effective at reducing the symptoms of pychosis and mania than other antipsychotics.

Second, the low D2 affinity only means that you have to take more of it to get the antipsychotic effect. That's why you're on 400 mg of Seroquel when you would be on 5 mg of Zyprexa.

Nobody knows why drug A works better in one person than drug B. If we did, we wouldn't need to spend all this time on trial and error. However, note that all atypicals bind to a lot of different receptors, but not with the same affinity.
