swanny
got paranoid schizophrenia. at the moment i cant think straight. i cant concentrate. i feel my thoughts are being blocked. i cant plan ahead. the seroquel im taking at the moment hasnt helped with that but then again im on a small dose. 1: should the seroquel help with the concentration, thinking etc.? 2: would you say that the problems concentrating etc. is a negative symptom of schizophrenia? coz i just heard that the atypicals such as seroquel are more effective than the old ones at treating the negative stuff. netsavy006
I know from reading here that atypical antipsychotics like seroquel are good for negative symptoms of schizophrenia. I just started Zyprexa a little over a week ago and I noticed that I have clearer thinking, but that was from a mood symptom as oppose to psychotic symptoms. jarn
Seroquel has never helped with my concentration/cognitive issues.
Aurochs
There's little evidence that atypical antipsychotics are effective at treating negative symptoms. The only effective drug treatments for concentration and focus symptoms are stimulants, alpha agonists, and Strattera.
swanny
If the concentration problems are from your thinking that your thoughts are being blocked then the Seroquel might be able to help that. That is more of a MI issue than a cognitive issue. forgive me for asking this but whats does MI mean? plz explain.
Moil
I hope it means Mental Illness, otherwise quite a few of my posts probably don't make sense. ...and Sylvan posted while I was typing, so yes Mental Illness.
Velvet Elvis
Unless you meet ADHD criteria, it's a negative symptom of schitzophrenia.
NullChamber
abilify is said to be useful in treating negative symptoms. its supposed to increase firing rate of dopamine at areas where a lack of dopamine would produce negative symptoms. while decreasing dopamine in areas where too much dopamine would produce positive symptoms. the trade off is that you'll probably feel super restless on the med. there's a good pdf file i came across that contains a lot of information on cognitive dysfunction in mental illness. http://www.omh.state...cogdyshndbk.pdf it says that cognitive dysfunction can also be treated through cognitive remeditation therapy. drugs are said to be largely ineffective for cognitive symptoms. then again, i take strattera and it seems to help me quite a bit. Thomas
I still have the restlessness after several years on 20 mg. Abilify, but at least my pdoc was able to stop what she said was TD by prescribing Cogentin twice a day. Tommy
