netsavy006
I notice that I have as the Abilify website puts it "inner sense of restlessness or need to move" and I am moving around more often than I was before inpatient. I'm trying to manage it the best I can because I don't want to think about akathisia as I've tried medications for it with failure (Cogentin, Artane, Inderal, Benadryl, Valium, Klonopin, Xanax, Niravam). The only medication that's even moderately help before inpatient was Ativan but I don't want to increase my dosage for akathisia like symptoms, especially since I can't be sure if it's the start of akathisia. I have no way to get in contact with my pdoc (because I don't have his number or secretary's) and I don't see him till this Wednesday. I can't just take extra pills to get through it because then I'd run out of Ativan too quickly and wouldn't be able to fill my next prescription before the appropriate times. I don't highly think it's the AAPs as they have a low EPS rate, but something is making me more restless for the past 2 days so I'd like to know can something other than the medications make you more restless, because I don't feel anxious or depressed right now. Thanks for helping me, Andy. P.S. ETA: I'm not looking to medicate this problem, but looking for non-medication things I may be able to do to help myself. Thanks. Unfortunately, I can't imagine anything besides meds helping with akathesia. When I used to have it I was MISERABLE and luckily Cogentin worked for me...I'm sorry it doesn't for you. I do remember, however, playing games with my family and it got my mind off it a bit. But I was rocking like crazy! AAPs definitely still cause akathesia. However, maybe you are restless because you aren't sleeping well? Or maybe your muscles are stiff or something else. I felt restless when I started drinking again for some reason. Definitely don't take your Ativan to an extreme cause you know that's dangerous.
netsavy006
Well I know I'm sleeping well. I go to bed at 10pm and I'm asleep before 11pm. I get up 6am during the week and 8 - 9 am on weekends. I know that my muscles aren't stiff. I do notice though that I'm not up and down all the time so it may or may not be akathisia, I just know that's the extreme. But one question I have is in addition to what you mentioned what else could aggregate restlessness in general? (like if your feeling restless, what wouldn't you eat or drink or take because it would make it worse) Thanks, Andy.

Hi, To answer your question, when I'm restless, coffee or any caffeine really makes it worse. Sugar might as well. I don't have scientific theories to back this up, just my own experiences. For me also when I started drinking again I was restless because it was really taxing my body. Boredome even does it, as does sitting in one position for a long time. Now, I have NEVER had true akathesia except when on AAPs! Any other restlessness pales in comparison to the hell I went through on Geodon, Abilify, Saphris, Seroquel, and Risperdal. netsavy006
I hope others can chime in too but I do thank you koali777 for your help. I will do my best to stay away from caffeine and as much sugar as possible until this passes.
SashaSue
Andy, has there been any recent change in your meds, that might have lead to this problem?
netsavy006
The most recent change was the addition of Zyprexa on 10/21. (5mg @ bedtime) (but I'm not going to discontinue or decrease my Clozaril or Zyprexa)
december_brigette
andy, this is a little off topic, but you wrote it: "I have no way to get in contact with my pdoc (because I don't have his number or secretary's)..." 1. search the internet, phone book 2. next appt get 3-4 of his business cards and put them around your house where you will see them. you NEED pdoc's #!!!! db
netsavy006
I happened to look at my phone this morning before calling Walgreens Pharmacy and it happened to have the facility where he works phone number, so I gather from there I could get to him, somehow. I didn't even know I had his facilities number. (the akathisia like syndrome by the way has calmed down a lot. Maybe it was the iced tea friday @ the halloween party @ program, and a chocolate bar yesterday @ about 2pm yesterday that might of done it.);(maybe I'm sensitive to caffeine)
koali777
Maybe...when I was on antipsychotics caffeine affected me HARDCORE. In my case it was pleasurable actually, having like a shot of dopamine, but I could see you being extra sensitive and getting restless.
