maca root for side effects?

Recommended Posts

Saw a talk by Dr. Christina Dording on this stuff. Supposed to be good for some of the side effects from SSRI's. Her studies are mostly with women but I recall she said there's quite a bit of Spanish language papers on effects on men. She also said that it doesn't seem to have many side effects itself. Vendors say there are people in Peru who use it for food. I think it might be helping some, not completely sure. Anyone else know anything about this stuff?

I haven't done any research on it. Try erowid and wikipedia. With any psychoactive herb or supplement there's a chance of interaction with any other meds you might be on so check with your pdoc unless you've got a pretty sound idea of its mechanism of action and how it fits into the chemical soup in your brain.

Natural doesn't mean safe.

Well, I haven't found much solid either, but Dr. Dording was giving a talk at MGH as part of a large program, and as I recall she has official affiliations there. Very high noise level when searching on this stuff.
