I am currently taking 30mgs of zyprexa. It works to control my positive symptoms, but among other things I am sleeping 16 hours a day. This is a problem because I want to return to work (currently on ssdi). Would geodon not make me sleep as much?

For me, Geodon was extremely sedating. Didn't matter what dosage. I would take it and a couple hours later, I was so sedated I couldn't do anything but go to sleep. I would sleep for 12 hours, and wake up with that medicine hangover. Sucked. The sedation never went away. Im not even sure if it worked for my symptoms.

I'm wondering how long you've been taking zyprexa? Sometimes the sedation gets better over time. The big concern I'd have about switching to geodon in your position would be efficacy. Zyprexa works for a lot of people for whom geodon does not.

I've found ziprasidone rather sedating, and at first it gave me a hangover feeling if I didn't sleep at least 8 hours a night. It also caused insomnia if I didn't take it with enough food. Now, after two months, the hangover effect has gone but the sedation is still there, although not as strong as it was initially.

Thanks for the replies. I've been on zyprexa for about a year now. I guess its kind of a crap shoot if it would be better or not. I'm fairly stable on zyprexa, but I've gained a lot of weight and sleep most of the day.

I'm just worried that when the continuing disability review rolls around sleeping 16 hours a day won't cut it for disability. I mean I am stable enough to work full time, but I can't because of the excessive sleep. Do you guys think it would be worthwhile to try to push my pdoc for a med change? or should I not risk my stability?

I must say, the only drug that has ever given me *actually* restorative sleep was Geodon. This is aside from the mood stabilizing effects. Unfortunately I got some wicked dystonia and after a while it started making me feel pretty terrible when I took it. I would be really, really sleepy but have to pace out of agitation for 45 minutes or so. I would only sleep for 7-8 hours and wake up completely restored, however, which is something I had not had before in my life and have not had since.
