My guess would be that, if it's a medication issue, it's probably connected to the lamictal. I know I had a lot of word finding issues and such, when I first started lamictal. For most people, those things get better over time. So, if the meds are working, try just waiting a while, and see how things go.

If you started Wellbutrin and the side effect started, then most likely it is Wellbutrin.

If the last change was an adjustment to Lamictal, then Lamictal is probably the problem. (Word find problems are related to anticonvulsants. Cognitive problems are more likely due to this med as well. However, some people have problems with Wellbutrin.)

If you were on both meds at the same doses for a while before it started, then it is probably a symptom of your underlying MI. If that is bipolar, then possibly hypomania. "Thoughts flying away" sounds a bit like racing thoughts, too. Also, both meds are activating. How is your sleep?

Stacia seems to have the best take on it. I think it sounds like Lamictal, but if Wellbutrin was the most recent med change, it's probably either that or something non-med-related. (I don't think it sounds like hypomania, though – doesn't that involve being super verbal? It does at least for me).

I'm betting on the Lamictal. For some people, the cognitive problems get better with time, for others, it they get worse with time. I had very little trouble when I first started on it, and had the intellect of a bottle of glue by the time I stopped (yes, I exaggerate, but it was pretty bad). So it could be that now is when your problem kicks in. How much Lamictal are you taking? Some people find this problem gets better or goes away at a slightly lower dose. But whatever we all think it could be, I would definitely talk to your pdoc about it.

My dosage of Lamictal was doubled at the same time, so it's hard to tell which one caused it. Before though, I didn't have those problems, but if it's usually Lamictal that causes that, that might be it. I've been going to bed at a decent time recently, the only reason I wouldn't say it's related to my MI is because, I don't feel like my thoughts are racing. I feel as though they're really slow, and then I forget and have to think really hard to remember, or search for words.

If it's Lamictal that's causing that slowness, could it go away?! Because Lamictal has the least side effects, I really don't look forward to switching back to Depakote or anything...

Also, is there a substitute for Wellbutrin that I could talk to my doctor about today? I already have pretty bad skin & this medication is drying it out and causing acne as well as causing hair loss. He prescribed it because he thought it was a efficient way to handle the depression as well as ADHD. I wanted to focus more on the ADHD.. especially if Lamictal is already making me unable to think quickly... (assuming that is the cause) & Wellbutrin didn't have much effect on that.

Yes, it sounds like Lamictal is your culprit. Yes, too, it may pass. If you are impatient and reasonably stable, you could ask your pdoc to reduce the dose by a little and then give yourself time to adjust before raising to your present level. The higher the dose, the more likely are side effects. The bigger the increase, the more likely, too. Doubling is a big increase. Lamictal, I think, is a med worth baby sitting a little when starting. It is a good med for many.

It makes sense to want to deal with the ADHD if the depression is not bad. The thing is, though, Lamictal is an activating med. Adding speed may tip you hypo/manic. That probably is a consideration of your pdoc.

As for ADs to try, your pdoc is more apt to get that right than folks on the Internet.

ETA:

I wouldn't freak about Wellbutrin's seizure risk potential unless you have a seizure disorder or plan to abruptly stop from a high dose.

I'd put my money on Lamictal as well, espectially since you'd changed the does. Bupropion + Lamictal 100mg for me was fine for very thinky (PhD) work, but bupropion + Lamictal 200mg was an awful (considering dropping out of PhD because I couldn't speak right) combination.
