Well, I've been on Paxil for about six months and my depression is a lot better. I can even function, go to the store, take a shower, brush my teeth, etc. all the things that are nearly impossible with a bad depression. Anyway, I've noted on cyberland that Paxil has been compared to being the worst poison that was ever discovered and when and if I try to stop using it, I shall suffer the pains in hell that will possibly make childbirth feel like a day at the beach.

My dear friends, can I have any opiniions about Paxil, pro or con? Let me down slowly, though......I am enjoying not feeling a crushing, helpless, deathlike depression.

Way back when I was 16 or so, I went off Paxil, which I had been on for two years. I don't recall any notable problems with it unlike other psych-meds. The taper went smoothly, and I don't even think I was tapered down slowly.

paxil helped a lot with my ocd but not so much with depression. i took it for 1.5 ish years. i went off 75mg of it via prozac over the course of a week [and i made a topic about it cuz i was apprehensive about the same things as you mention]. this was a couple weeks ago. i didn't have any withdrawal symptoms. although now i am depressed as fuck. who knows why.

edit: and i'm 23 if it matters.

You don't get addicted to antidepressants at all. Your brain gets used to the chemical changes they make, so when you taper down, there can be side effects. I've gone off ADs and had no problem with it. If Paxil works for you, stick with it. As far as I'm concerned, the folks in the nursing home where I end up will have to pry my bupropion out of my arthritic hands before I'll give it up.

Thanks! You know, to feel capable of shopping, taking care of your family, brushing your teeth, being functional, not laying in bed all day, unable to even take a shower due to depression, that's no way to live. Anything is more acceptable than living almost like a wounded animal. It destroys yourself and your loved ones suffer so much. It's time for people who need medications, not to feel ashamed. Who is ashamed, for instance, to take medications if they had cancer? Not many.....our brains are complicated and many things can go wrong with them.

I just got back from my gp's office because I am having some trouble with high blood pressure (runs in family), anyway, he said some people who discontinue SSRI's need to taper off it when they quit. I never had to taper off any SSRI's but will see when the time comes.

PS..my bp was good 130/90, which for me, is great.

If the paxil is hard to taper off you can always switch to prozac with the super long half life and taper off that... it's easier.

besides which, if it's working, live in today. you aren't at taper time yet right? some people do just fine tapering of paxil anyway....

paxil is no worse than any other ssri though can be super activating for some, which is why it's not the best choice for everyone.

Ah, the joys of interent surfing and opinions....

  • 2 months later...

I am not having luck with the last 10 mg of Paxil. I am worried about my weight with regards to high blood pressure and arthritis.

I hope that I can get off this stuff and that my weight will go back to normal, as it were.
