I Need Some Sleep...

Recommended Posts

Hi. I'm Alysha and I have chronic severe insomnia for a long time. I have tried ambien, lunesta, rozeram, klonopin, Valium, vistaril, temazepam, ativan, seroquel, trazadone, Thorazine (tiny 5mg dose), Sonata, melatonin, valerian root, Benadryl, remeron, Elavil, and every manner of migraine and seizure med for this problem. What else is there? I'm desperate. Something heavy duty.

Wow! You sure have tried a lot. For me, Zyprexa was the granddaddy of them all and knocked me out for the entire next day.

How do you define insomnia? I mean, how many hours of sleep are you getting per night on average? Maybe therapy would help to find out why you have such a problem sleeping? Of course, you could always try a combo of meds such as Zyprexa with a low dose of Seroquel. Or Remeron plus Zyprexa. Talk to your doctor about it.

What happened when you tried them? Did they work for a while and then stop, or did they never work, or did the side effects make you quit?

Also, what exactly is the sleep problem you're having? Is it that you can't fall asleep, or that you can't stay asleep?

Have you seen a specialist?

Alot of those were in combination. I get one or two hours some nights and then none for days. I'm seeing a specialist now. My sleep study is scheduled for may but he won't prescribe anything until then. Ambien makes me hallucinate. The others in that class do nothing. The rest either worked for awhile, or not at all. I'm at the end of my rope. I haven't slept AT ALL in four days.

Hi,

are you seeing a psychiatrist or just a neurologist (and of course the sleep dr)?

Except for the years I was taking seroquel, I have always had insomnia. I was born not being able to fall asleep, and in the past 2 years it changed to waking up in the middle of the night and not being able to go back to sleep.

ok, i guess i dont have any suggestions. other than to let you know I've had similar problems with ambien. lunesta, trazodone, and benedryl only work 50% of the time. sleepytime tea is a joke.

I hope you are able to get some kind of help between now & your sleep study. I also wish you well for the study.

Wow, you have tried so many...

Have you tried taking combinations of the meds you listed?

For me, I take a combo of Trazadone, melatonin supplements, and benadryl (for its drowsy effects.) I have been taking sleeping meds since I was ten or so; I would go days without sleeping before that. I started out with just Tylenol PM; then I went to melatonin + Tylenol PM; then melatonin, Tylenol PM, and benadryl... then I dropped the Tylenol PM... then I got trazadone about a year ago and it really has worked miracles (except for when I accidentally take it in the morning instead of my anxiety meds!) I feel like I might be due for another adjustment soon, though; every week the time it takes for that combo to be effective increases.

My little sleep "combo" is Trazodone with a bit of Xanax mixed in. Most nights I actually can get by without the Xanax actually, so I would say Trazodone is my main thing.

When I was on Lexapro, I was up to 250 mg of Trazodone and barely getting 4 hours of sleep. Now that I'm on Prozac, I'm only on 50 mg of Trazodone and getting about 4-6 hours of sleep, even more if I add in the Xanax.

I hope you find your "remedy" soon - I know how frustrating it can be!

P.S. Oh yeah, I've done the Tylenol PM thing too mixed in with a little bit of Xanax - that also works!
