ImNotOk
I've only begun tx for adult ADD a month ago, but I can definitely tell that breakouts on my face have worsened. This is only day 3 of Adderall, and I'm hoping it won't be as rough on my face as the methylin. I eat a very clean diet--no meat, very little dairy, too many whole grains, lots of vegs and fruits, coconut oil for most of my fats, etc... I've read that most people agree that acne tends to increase with these 2 drugs and some of the other stims used to tx ADHD, but is there any way to lessen it without additional meds? I've had mild adult acne since my 40's anyway, and this is a small price to pay for sanity but you guys are a wealth of info! Thanks :~)
notfred
Once I started taking care of my skin on a consistent basis the ache went away. Cleaning, moisturizing, and exfoliating. I had to find what products work for me, even some expensive ones do not work for me. The other thing that works for me is Cleocin-T gel. I get the generic, so it is cheap. I bet my pdoc would prescribe it but my GP does. nf
ImNotOk
Thanks! That is good news. I've tried to be a bit more diligent with just cleansing and moisturizing, and so far so good. No worse than before. At least once the time for the usual monthly breakout went away. Once I started taking care of my skin on a consistent basis the ache went away. That Girl
I'm just going to throw this out there - because the above is good advice & maybe all you need to hear - but, stimulants increase my tendancy to PICK PICK PICK at stuff. Which just makes it all look worse & leads me to pick more. So, don't do that :-) Don't get stuck in the mirror, or worse yet, in a magnifying mirror with tweezers! :-) Too, with that in mind, you may be touching your face more - which is probably why a good / more frequent skin cleansing regimin is often helpful (as long as you find products that don't lead to more breakouts - like not fred, I've tried some really expensive things that not only didn't work, but contributed to more breakouts!) Good luck.
ImNotOk
Thanks...So far, I don't feel more "picky," but I've read on these boards that some have picked and caused some real damage. Funny thing is, I feel less likely to pick than I did when I wasn't medicated. I had severe hyperfocusing problems before starting Adderal that seem to have improved. Sadly, I kinda miss hyperfocusing! It was usually nonproductive focusing so, it had to go, but that doesn't keep me from missing it! koali777
I should post this pic I took of my thumb on my cell phone...lol. It's horrific. I picked a chunk of flesh out of my thumb without even realizing, until it was gushing with blood and THEN it hurt. I rub my face till there's acne, I pick at my shoulders and chest and neck and fingers...ahhh. Luckily the longer I'm on this stuff the better it gets (I think it's been 3 weeks?). I was a picker before too, definitely, but now it's way more noticeable to people. My mom keeps yelling at me to stop picking at my neck! lol. I was trying to blame my new acne on Adderall (it isn't the white head kinds but more just the little bumps) but I'm starting to think it's just because I incessantly rub my face. I tend to have clean hands but they're always a bit greasy. Gross I'm hoping as time goes on, it'll get better. Better than the teeth grinding I started out with! ImNotOk
Wow... I really hope that things get better for you! I don't know that this will help you at all, but generally speaking, I find that if I can just substitute a negative habit with a positive one, it usually works. For this habit, it would have to be something as easy to do and readily accessible as what you're doing. This may sound silly, but on youtube, I found a great hobby. Knot tying. If it floats your boat, you could keep a project in your pocket and work on it when you get the urge to pick. You can make awesome necklaces/bracelets etc... and it's fun and cheap. If you want to explore it, do a search on youtube for 'TyingItAllTogether.' Heck, if you don't want to do it, it is worth watching the one for the Celtic Heart Knot just to hear the tune ! Anyways, bless you, and let me know how it goes. I'd like to know if the s/e diminish on their own! I should post this pic I took of my thumb on my cell phone...lol. It's horrific. DrHENDERSON
Person before me almost hit in the center with answear about fat !!! So let me tell you whole story that goes like this : - All we know that people use carbs ( sugar ) or fats ( meat, oils ) to produce ENERGY to function like human being. - Now is the best part a little bit of physics: If we have two humans ( ROBIN and TOMY ) with weight and height the same AND they both ate “ 6 hamburgers”- ( in it carbs and fats ). After this big dinner Tomy went to his room and spended the rest of the day on a chair watching movies on youtube, like other people enjoy their life. Robin on the other hand, decided that he will go with his girlfriend GINNA for a long walk to the nearby Wood’s-Park, where he first time met Ginna. They came late at night, freezed and hungary. They both jumped in to the fridge so they could make some tasty super sandwiches. Later, that night Robin and Ginna went quickly to bed and together did fall like death in to the deep sleep. What happen to Tomy ? Before he went to bed at 5 am morning, he eat huge bag of chips ( 25 normal servings in a bag ) and he drank his girlfriend ( ANNA ) 4 Energy drinks. She used them only for emergency situations when she had to study for a test or go to work for a night shift. Anna will be mad and she will show Tomy what is stress all about when she will come from night shift tired! Guess who has problem with acne? Let me help you first! Robin and Tomy genetically almost the same very healthy had too much for dinner 6 big hamburgers BUT. Robin got his fats and carbs to produce energy and he used it in very effective way ( walking, talking, loving ). So let say he got 2555 calories in him and he used them all. Food was digested and used in 99% so there was no time for food to stop in his digestive track and wait for him to start using it. This is Robin’s life style where he unconsciously must have high metabolism to get his energy producing and using. Tomy’s DS (digestive system) was up sad, because he putted so much calories in his body and he used only 35% . What happen to the 75% of food energy? Some of it decided that will change to a fat and some of it decided to sit there and wait and ferment to harmful toxins. Those toxins gets in to the blood by capillary channels and they circulate in the whole body system where most of the time end up on Tomy’s face, neck, chest or legs. Skin just doing every day job by expelling toxins. Face skin is sensitive, has many sensory fibers, so it wants to clean it fast because doesn’t tolerate inflammation caused by toxins. What about 4 energy drinks that Tomy consumed? He just increased his body temperature and his heart pumping function for no reason letting toxins flow in larger number in to his blood system and polluting his nice skin even farther. The same with RITALIN or ADDERALL or COFFEE or other stimulants. If there is undigested food in your DS from where toxins are produced, You will always get some kind of ACNE or redness or Inflammation or other kind of bad reaction in your kidneys or eyes or adrenal glands. Remember skin just showing you that there is something wrong with your lymph nodes system which is your cleaning system parallel to blood system. So be happy that you got first alarm from your body saying “ PLEASE FIX ME OR THERE WILL BE MORE TO FIX AND THAN CAN BE TO LATE “. Some people don’t get this kind of alarm and they find about their disease later when drugs or other procedures are required. Everything must have PURPOSE, other way just sits there and make no sense in purpose which is your nice looking face. Thanks
Anna
Um, Dr. Henderson, this is complete nonsense. Really, I don't even get the point of your post. Anna
