Can Abilify cause shaking months after starting it?

Recommended Posts

Perhaps it's just a bad day, but I've got the shakes in my right arm/hand, pretty bad.

Can Abilify start causing shaking months after being on it? I've been taking it since last October or so.

Thanks!

Tremor is a "Common" side effect, occurring in greater than 5% of users in trials. 'When' a side effect occurs is not listed.

If this effect is worrying your call your pdoc or go to an urgent care/ER, and in any case be sure to mention it at your next office visit.

Hope things settle down. a.m.

Thanks guys.

So far I can handle it, but it freaks me out a bit. I see my gp tomorrow, so. I'll see if I can find my Congentin, which I haven't taken since I was on Seroquel....or I will ask my GP for some more tomorrow. If it continues I will bring up with my pdoc.

Darnit!

It's a pretty common benign reaction. Cogentin is a good med for that. A beta-blocker like Nadolol can also be used - it has anti-anxiety properties too.. if that's an issue for you. Go ahead and tell your pdoc, but don't worry too much about it.

Ativan I take PRN and it's been around a week and a half since I took any, so I don't think that's it. I've been good about taking my Lamotrigine. I missed a couple of 5mg pills of my Abilify, but I'm still taking the 20mg and have the 5mg pills to take my full dose. But I can't imagine taking 20mg would make a real difference for a few days? LOWERING the dose?

Thanks Cetkat. Btw, I might ask my gp about Nadolol, if it's good for anxiety too!

Welcome. Yeah, the only (possible - if your BP is on the high side, it wouldn't be an issue) negative is that it lowers your blood pressure. So you gotta take that into consideration.. it'll make you dizzy and light headed if the BP goes too low. However, I've learned that eating something salty - or even just straight salt will fix that in like 15mis. So it's really not too much of a big deal.

Hmmm, maybe not, it doesn't look good for insulin and I've convinced myself the reason I feel sick every day is I'm diabetic (hypochondriac much?). Anyways, I'd like to know why I'm always exhausted and feel like puking (checked pregnancy....two inconclusives, 1 negative - phew!) so I'm going to see him tomorrow and ask for blood tests, which I'm overdue for because I haven't actually gone to get the tests done the last times my gp and pdoc gave me requisitions.....heh oops.

Since you're doing a blood test, you should probably have a full panel done to check if there's something off that is causing your symptoms. CMP is what it's called. As far as an interaction between insulin and Nadolol, no clue. Sounds like a question for your gdoc.

I think I probably will since my annual is coming up anyways. I want my thyroid checked for sure, and blood sugars. Ughh, didn't think about this causing shaking, it's been going on (feeling sick) for months, but it's never been really bad enough to see anyone about. Just eveeerrrrry day.

Blood sugar is included - the Thyroid is a TSH test. Not that your doc wouldn't know that.. just some info so you know exactly what to ask for.

I never did stop shaking after taking it for a year. It was pretty noticeable. I had one of the moms in my girl scout troop ask if I had thyroid issues. Naturally she didn't know about being BP. My dr. called it Parkinsonian Tremors. I'm still very shaky and I quit taking it a week ago. But I've never had very steady hands.

I'm also having - not tremors, or I can barely see them and aren't sure they're visible - but like internal tremors - does that make sense? Is that somehow associated with this or is it just some weird other thing? I feel a bit restless but not akathisia level I don't think. I just stretch.

Yes, tremors/mov't disorder can show up anytime.... that's why there is the 'tardive" in TD, for example.

go see both your pdoc and gdoc to figure this one out. I would get a full physical as it sounds like you need one.

However, one way to find out if this IS a mov't disorder is to TRY the cogentin and see if it helps. If so, you've kinda got your answer in a way, but I'd still consult with pdoc as mov't stuff is really important to address.

I emailed pdoc and he can't/won't see me until the end of August - since I'm away then, and they wouldn't give me an earlier appointment, I'm not seeing him until September 12. He told me not to take Cogentin or Benadryl.

I know some people might say to find another pdoc, but I have looked before and it was the most awful experience of my life. And my pdoc is normally a wonderful man, and so is his admin, who relays his decisions, but this time....I don't know. Maybe I've bothered them too much.

I feel stuck.

I have my physical tomorrow and had bloodwork done a few weeks back.

You should ask for a reason why. Find out if it's a med reason (I can't think of one) or an "I can't see you & therefore can't treat you" reason. If it's the latter, your GP can advise you to take them should they agree.

When you see your GP, definitely tell about the tremor AND the internal "shaking." That may be a more important issue than feeling tired. Or not. I don't want to sound alarmist, but movement disorders are a big deal. Relay to your pdoc all that your GP says.If your pdoc disagrees with anything, push for an sooner appt to discuss it.

A lot of things can make you feel tired. Vitamin D deficiency can and it is very common. I would ask for that in addition to a full panel. You already know about thyroid. The rest of the blood tests can reveal a number of things. Although it'd leave you without answers, hopefully everything comes back normal.

A couple non-med things. Are you exercising much? Reduced or lack of exercise can cause tiredness, especially if you reduced what you were doing in the past. Depression, even very mild, can cause tiredness and brain fog. If you have any apathy happening, spend some more time assessing this. I know that I can have a hard time sussing out what's medically caused or mood disorder when the mood issues are pretty minor.

ETA: Another thing that can cause real tiredness is allergies. They can suck in ways beyond sneezing and wheezing. Some of the medicines don't help with somnolence, either.

Well, my physical is now on the 12th b/c I called today and the bloodwork is still not in. Colour me unimpressed. Oh well.

I'm not exercising quite as much, b/c the neuroma in my foot has been bothering me a bit, but last week I did:

Sunday - 14k hike

Monday - 8.5k run with pack of clothes/shampoo etc

Tuesday - rest, foot hurt

Wednesday - 4.2k run (supposed to be further but foot sore)

Thursday - rested foot

Friday-Sunday - canoe trip with portages

So I think I'm okay there.

I'm sleeping with ear plugs now b/c my partner snores more now that he's on Remeron, and he was already a snorer, which me now not being on Seroquel is an issue, and that's helping a bit with the tiredness, though not totally.

I don't think I'm depressed - I've considered it - but I'm not unhappy, if that makes sense. So I think I'm okay there.

I do have allergies, but they're pretty minor, and I don't have any other symptoms at the moment.

Thanks, everyone. I don't want to have movement disorder issues, and they're so minor at the moment, but something is there and I don't know what to think. I feel like I've already pushed and that to go back would just really put me in my pdoc's/pdoc's admin's bad graces. I suppose I shouldn't care though, but I've got to work with them, you know? And I asked my GP about Cogentin right after this first started, but he felt it was too soon and now that the pdoc says no I doubt he'll prescribe it.
