give&take
Can anyone tell me wich neuroleptics against shizophrenia do not cause man boobs? And wich ingediant does cause the man boobs?
Velvet Elvis
It's just weight gain in general that causes that. Geodon, Invega, and Abilify are less likely than some others to have the metabolic side effects that lead to weight gain. Some of the older typical APs such as Haldol might also be better in this regard.
notfred
Can anyone tell me wich neuroleptics against shizophrenia do not cause man boobs? And wich ingediant does cause the man boobs? Neuroleptics have a single ingredient, the medication itself. Many neuroleptics increase prolactin, hence the man boobs. Sorry, I don't know of any that don't do this. nf
notfred
1. Increased levels of the hormone prolactin – caused by pituitary tumor or particular medicines (cimetidine, omeprazole, spironolactone, imatinib mesylate, finasteride and certain antipsychotics); 2. Increased levels of the estrogenic hormones – present in case of certain testicular tumors, tumors that produce androstenedione or HCG, hyperthyroidism, cirrhosis, taking drugs for treating prostate cancer etc. 3. Decreased levels of testosterone - congenital or acquired testicular disorders, abusing anabolic hormones, disorders of the hypothalamus and pituitary gland. http://ehealthforum.com/health/topic106682.html Gynecomastia is the medical term for "man boobs". Try googling Gynecomastia and Prolactin. nf

Sorry, I don't know of any that don't do this. nf Not all cases are the result of prolactin increases. Just plain old weight gain can result too. At any rate the APs I listed above, with the exception of Ivega, are unlikely to cause prolactin increases as well.
AnneMarie
Risperdal is the worst of the atypical antispychotics for elevating prolactin levels. If you had a problem on that med it does not mean you'll have a problem on others.
Guest Vapourware
If you're from a country with access to the AP Solian, that's another which is known to be quite bad in causing that problem.
give&take
i had gynecomastia and was operated last year. i allready had gynecomastia before i started the medication (clozapine). the doctors had to check my hormone levels and had to check if the boobs came from my medication. they said no and i actualy like clozapine. it's perfect for treating my shizophrenia but makes me tired and almost unable to work if i take more than 12,5mg before sleeping. now i'm looking for a med that's good for treating shizophrenia and doesn't increase the prolactine and if posible doesn't make you tired. please recommend a few to me.
