area99
I was recently put on citalopram for anxiety and depression. I am hyper sensitive to meds so the pdoc starts me on very very low doses of everything. He told me to take 5mg for seven days and them up it to 10mg It seems to have a slightly calming effect but not nearly what I need. I have a feeling a dosage increase will happen on my next pdoc visit, that is if the 10mg turns out not to be enough... Who here has had good experiences with citalopram (for whatever condition)? What dose did it start to really help?
confused
I take lexapro which is a similar ssri for anxiety and depression. it took a few weeks for it to take effect. It helps me a lot with anxiety and somewhat with depression. I take 10 mg but I don't know how that would equate to citalopram.
tryp
10 mg of Lexapro is supposedly about 20 mg of Celexa. I was on Celexa for a while. While it was working, it did quite well for me. It definitely gave me a few depression-free months. I think I had to go to 30 mg before I really got a lift though.
water
I have had a great relationship so far with lexapro. I started very very slowly because the med scared me for some reason. So I cut it up and increased the dose little by little. It really started to help when I reached 20 mg. I was still having major depressive episodes on wellbutrin alone but when I added lexapro my magic combo was born. I did have some side effects with lexapro (mostly sleepiness, agitation, dizziness, insomnia, nausea) but the all the side effects calmed down after a couple of months. Welshy
I have taken 80 mgs of Celexa for a few years now and it has worked well for me. I believe I started out at 20 and then of course, worked up to where I am now. I haven't had any side effects from it. Peace, T

What dose did it start to really help? IIRC, citalopram has 5-HT2A antagonism as a side effect. When I tried it while otherwise unmedicated I found that low doses of it were effective within 60 minutes and allowed me more control over the prioritization of stimuli allowing me to choose what to respond to. In other terms it reduced sensory overload. I was taking 20 mg tablets when I was using it. I never noticed any antidepressant effect of from its serotonin reuptake inhibition. But I did get that god awful serotonin induced nausea that serotonin reuptake inhibitors give me when starting such a med. Now that I am on Zyprexa/olanzapine it is simply a sugar pill that does nothing for me. Edit: Grammar
Laume
40 mg of citalopram stabilized me for a while when I was on it a few years back (it eventually crapped out on me). No side effects really, so that's a good thing. Good luck - hope it works
