AAPs that don't (or are less likely) to raise prolactin levels

Recommended Posts

so i've been on the following AAPs that have all caused me to lactate (and i gave up nursing to start meds!):

risperdal (also facial movements, gained 8lbs in a month)

saphris (also facial movements, gained 2lbs in a week)

seroquel

the weight gain all came off within a week of stopping meds.

i've also been on abilify but got severe tremors, nausea, and dizziness so was taken off. my lithium levels were bordering on high though so we my try it again.

i'm going back to the pdoc next wednesday and just want to be more informed on the possibilities. i'm looking around online, but would like your opinions as well.

i'd also like to avoid weight gainers as i'm sensitive to that as well.

from what i've heard/read abilify (if i can take it) followed by geodon are good options. that sound right?

I finally stopped lactating two years after having kidlet. I was never engorged or anything, but it was enough that I noticed.

I like Geodon, and I actually quit lactating a week or two after I stopped Abilify and went to it. Not sure if that was a coincidence, as Abilify isn't supposed to raise prolactin levels. Per the PI sheet, anyway.

Latuda isn't supposed to be a weight gainer, but I haven't heard of it working all that great for BP.

Most AAP's are weight gainers, but you really don't know until you try them. Some of the AP's don't have as much weight gain (Trilafon comes to mind), but then you have the higher risk of EPS.

Low carb diets help, if you can swing it.

Any AAP or AP can elevate prolactin. Dopamine regulates its release, so dopamine antagonism can increase its presence. Risperdal and Invega seem to be the worst, but any of them can theoretically do it. Really, you just kind of have to try them and see.

How long ago did you stop nursing? You may be more sensitive than usual to this side effect simply because your prolactin levels are already pretty high.

As Sasha said, it's hard to predict which ones are going to make you start lactating. The only way to know is to try them.

Tremors, nausea, and dizziness are more common in lithium toxicity than Abilify therapy, but either one could cause them. If the Abilify didn't make you start lactating or gaining weight, it might be a good starting point.

on average risperidone (Risperdal), amisulpride (Solian), and the older ones are most likely to raise prolactin, while quetiapine (Seroquel) and clozapine (Leponex/Clozaril) are at the opposite end.

i stopped nursing almost a year ago, so i don't think it's that... (hope not...)

and that's what my pdoc and i are thinking (re: abilify). i see him wednesday, so... ::crosses fingers::
