Cinnamon
I have severe OCD - I have this crazy compulsion to write any word that I see or hear on my arm repeatedly with my finger for hours, as well as a number of other compulsions - along with Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and I am considering Paxil or Luvox as a form of treatment. It seems weird to me that I have never been put on either of these medications, as I have been on every other SSRI on the planet. However, when I am honest with myself, I also suffered from severe anorexia nervosa for about 9 years and refused to be put on any medication that might cause weight gain during that time, and I know that, at least as statistics are concerned, these meds are more likely than other SSRIs to cause weight gain. I am - thanks to countless hospitalizations - substantially recovered from my anorexia - I am at a low but healthy weight - and willing to experiment with medications that I refused in the past in order to conquer my OCD once and for all. Unfortunately, my brain is still permanently marred by the anorexia, and I still worry about weight gain on either of them. I would be very grateful for anyone who has taken Luvox or Paxil to tell me that these medications did not cause any noticeable metabolic effects or increases in appetite, so that I might be given the courage to discuss these meds with my psychiatrist. Thank you in advance! (Also, if you did have any side effects on either of these meds, I would be grateful to hear about them, as it might help me decide which of the two to try first!) NewMe
I am on paxil 30mg right now and have taken it in the past too and I personally lost weight on it but I think it had to do with me not binging anymore because I wasnt as depressed or not depressed. I had a side effect as a kid (mid 1990s when it first came out) which was a tick, but I have been on it this time since December?? and *knock on wood* I have had no tick or other side effects. Every person is different, hell, remeron made me forget about eating all together and I lost 20lbs before I went off of it...most people want to eat a tub of icing after taking it. PLUS I am hypersensitive to ALL meds my new pdoc has realized, if there is a rare side effect chances are I will be the one who has it and I think I may turn in to a goat soon lol. I am happy to hear that you are getting better from your ED, One day at a time, and meds are a good idea especially since you are BP1...oh and as far as Mood stabilizers you will be happy to hear that Lamictal is weight neutral
Cinnamon
Sweetpeas, thank you so much for your response, especially since we strangely seem to have ALL the same diagnoses. I also have been told by my psychiatrist that, if a side effect is even physically possible, I will have it, so we seem the same in that respect, as well. Because of that, when I hear that a side effect - i.e., weight gain - is a possibility, I always assume that I will have it, so I am happy to hear that you did not gain weight on Paxil. I was on Lamictal at one point and, while it was completely weight neutral, it also seemed to have no positive effects, either. I would be so thrilled to find a mood stabilizer that worked and also did not cause me to eat in a way that I found frightening, but it is quite possible that it does not yet exist... In any case, thank you so much for answering my post! kittyloaf
I was on Paxil for a couple years and I didn't gain weight on it. I don't remember having any side effects but it's been a while since I was on it! I hope you can find something that will work for you.

San
I've been on both in the past, neither made me gain weight. Luvox helped a lot.
Laume
Sorry to be the debbie-downer in this topic, but my sister and I both gained weight on Paxil. imho a bad drug, but that's a different story
rowan77
Myself and my aunt were on Paxil and we both gained a lot of weight on it. My aunt still takes it for depression and OCD and considers it to be very effective despite the weight gain. No experience with Luvox. Good luck!!
