A bit afraid of going to sleep tonight

Recommended Posts

So, I only got 1 hour of sleep in the past 2 days, and right now I'm really really tired. Just had a very long day at a local music fest/Holiday event, exhausted from interacting with people, the warmth/weather, and not having had anything to eat during the day.

Ready to be knocked out, but whenever I get this tired and fall asleep, I usually have really terrifying dreams.

Not that anything can really be done about it...I don't think. But I'll probably be up watching Netflix for the next many hours, and when I finally do fall asleep the night terrors might be that much worse.

Any suggestions?

You definately want to see a pdoc about this. I used to have terrible night terrors and the thing that helped me was propanolol. It helped with my anxiety better than benzos.

Honestly, if the nightmares are so bad that you can't sleep, you should check yourself into a hospital or urgent care. The doctor might just prescribe something like trazadone (which I found helps with night mares a little bit) or a sleep aid; they might recommend a sleep study; they may suggest you stay in the psych ward a few nights.

I went to the hospital when i was manic and I wasn't able to sleep for more than a couple hours a night. I had broken sleep, nightmares and just couldn't sleep (among other symptoms). It took about 20 hours, but once the antipsychotics started to kick in, I could sleep. I still wasn't having the most pleasant dreams, but they were much easier to handle. After I continued to complain of nightmares, the doctor prescribed pronanolol. It didn't make the nightmares go away, but it helped me sleep through them.

It took months of trial and error to find the right meds. Now that I'm stable, I rarely have nightmares.

Before I was diagnosed and found a pdoc and meds I'd lay on the couch w/ cnn or headline news turned on with the volume real low and try to rest.

Got some sleep today...well over 12 hours worth, and that was nice. When I go without sleep for a while, my blood pressure tends to rise and I also seem to overheat. Put some ice in a ziploc bad and put it on the back of my neck for a while to help cool me down, and that seemed to do the trick.

Had one bad dream last night, but nowhere near what I'm used to in terms of intensity.

And I don't know why (because I've inquired for them before), but my Pdoc seems to be resistant to the idea of either medication for sleep problems. I've been seeing him for a long, long time, so going to another is pretty much out of the question in terms of my own personal comfort level.

Well this was the question I stopped by the sleeping board to ask.

Really scary nightmares so that tonight I opted not to sleep becuase being really tired is way way better than being freaked out of my mind with nightmares that don't go away when I wake up. Doc won't give me sleeping pills becuase I will become addicted to anything I can get my sticky hands on.
