Doctor's Taper Suggestion for Lamictal-- Too fast?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone

I went to a new Psychiatrist and told her that I wanted to come off Lamictal. I had done some previous research about how others have done it and came up with a chart to show her. She took one glance at it, didn't acknowledge it and proceded to tell me how she wanted me to come off it.

I take 200 mg total of Lamictal. I take 100 mg in the morning and 100 mg at night.

This is what she wants me to do:

1. Drop a whole 100 mg off (the night one) the first week

2. The 100 mg that is left in the morning cut to 50 mg for the second week.

3. And then stop all together at the end of the second week.

Isn't this too fast? Only 2 weeks and cutting a whole 100 mg off the first week and then cutting the last 100 to 50 for the next week and thats it.

Thank you for your help.

the general rule of thumb for lamictal is taper down exactly the way you tapered up, I think, if you can remember.

That being said, you CAN taper faster, especially if you might be cross tapering to something else? I don't really know, eh. I don't think that taper would be actively harmful, but it may be to fast for you as di says.

i'd ask doc more, maybe, and then try it and see how you do.

See how you feel. That was too fast for me, but others can go off of it that fast. You're going to have to see how it makes you feel. Is there any rush for getting you off of it so fast?

I know its going to be too fast for me. I've gone down on many meds and it was always hell for me. There is no rush. My plan was to taper down 25 mg at a time and yes that is a long time, but I would rather go slow then too fast and have a really bad reaction. I've heard horror stories of people going down too fast and want to avoid that.

The horror stories don't always happen. I'm in the same boat with the Lamictal d/c..

That's working fine for me - but it's not the norm.

If you feel that it's too fast, then it is. You need to confront your doctor with this and make her understand that you simply can't tolerate it. There's nothing wrong with going off more slowly.

My advice would be to try it her way, feel the bad result (should it come), stop the d/c, then go back with that info and ask for a slower schedule. That way you've followed her instructions and she'll feel like you've tried - rather than just simply refusing outright. Then go from there.

Good luck!
