Zyprexa weight gain...maybe switching to something else

Recommended Posts

I've been on Zyprexa for just under a month now, and I've already gained 10lbs which is a lot on my little frame. I hate it, and am worried that it will continue. I'm active (I walk/run about 3 miles at least 3 or 4 days a week), so the weight gain isn't from a sedentary lifestyle. My pdoc is on vacation until early August, but when I called the office they suggested I come in and see one of the nurse practitioners and maybe I'll have to switch meds. That's the last thing I want to do because a) switching meds sucks and b) other than the weight gain, I'm extremely happy with Zyprexa! It's the first med that I've felt this way about.

I'm going in tomorrow, and we'll see what happens...

If I am going to switch, do you guys know what meds are similar to Zyprexa but cause less weight gain? I've heard Zyprexa Zydis supposedly is good since it causes less weight gain than regular Zyprexa. I've also heard that Geodon is a good med for some and is weight neutral...

I just hate the whole med change thing!

Trying Zydis may be a good first alternative. While not a universal effect, weight gain is minimal for a lot of people. The metabolic syndrome cause by AAP's is a tough issue. The ones that are purportedly weight-neutral are often less potent in their antipsychotic effect. It really matters what it is you are treating (I don't see any conditions listed in your siggy). It is good that you are maintaining a decent level of physical activity. This can reduce the scope of weight gain pretty significantly. The nurse may also suggest an adjunctive diabetic med such as Metformin/glucophage. Your doc may be a little reluctant to change your meds wholesle if you are responding well.

I gained weight on zyprexa. I tried switching to zydis, but it didn't help much. People do have luck with zydis, though, so if you are happy with zyprexa it's worth a try. I've never tried geodon, but I've heard it doesn't cause weight gain. I take abilify now and don't have side-effects I'm aware of.
