Adding Lamictal to Cymbalta

Recommended Posts

I am current on 30mg of Cymbalta along with Lamictal for my depression. Cymbalta at the dose I'm at now seems to play very well in my brain. The Cymbalta does not cause the agitation that pretty much every other AD causes.

He is also titrating me up on Lamictal. I can't really tell if the lamictal is doing anything or now because the Cymbalta overpowers it. I know the threshold for depression relief (lamictal) can vary from like 25-100mg. I just think it's odd

that hes starting me on 2 antidepressants at once instead of either the Lamictal first...or the Cymbalta first. He probobably knows what hes doing though.

Who of you has had a positive outcome with Combining Cymbalta and Lamictal? Has it ever been seen that adding Lamictal To Cymbalta had a negative effect?

Lamictal is not exactly an ad. It's actually a mood stabilizer, though one that's more effective against depression. I don't really know what you mean about the cymbalta. "overpoowering," the lamictal. How could you know which med is doing exactly what?

Maybe your pdoc started you on both at once because he wanted to get you some relief from your symptoms asap.

Given that you've found other AD's agitating, he might have hoped that starting it with a mood stabilizer might minimize that.

Those are just kind of random guesses though. Really, to find out why your pdoc is prescribing anything, you should just ask him.

.

With the Cymbalta I had immediate relief after the first 30mg pill. Lamictal at 25 for a couple weeks has not kicked in yet. That's what I mean

by "the Cymbalta is overpowering it"

So maybe just that the cymbalta had a very quick reaction and the lamictal is harder to tell b/c you already have one med in place?

Beyond that...I didn't do a cymbalta/lamictal combination, but i did effexor/lamictal for a while and it was really helpful for me. The effexor got me about 80% of the way out of a depressive episode and the lamictal kicked me the rest of the way. FWIW, I've rarely heard of people feeling AD benefits in the 25-50mg range (though some people have an "initial kick" that fades)...I have heard of better luck around 100, but you can push it much higher than that as well. Mine was at 200-250mg when I had it with effexor. It went to 300mg when I dropped the effexor.

I think I had that "initial kick" from Lamictal the first 3 or 4 days. A very very very very mild antidepressant relief. This was before I was on the Cymbalta FYI.

Was it easy to come off of the Effexor? How long did the taper down take?
