spaceman
I'm currently on 450 mg of lamictal and it is not quite working as well as it should. Anyone taking a higher dosage or heard of a higher dosage being effective. I have an unusually high tolerance for most drugs.Could a higher dosage be effective? AnneMarie
It depends on what else you are taking. Depakote roughly doubles efficacy so you take half as much. Tegretol decreases efficacy so you take half again as much. Prescribing Info says dosing is up to 250mg if on Depakote, up to 400mg if not on Dep or T, and up to 600mg if on Tegretol. These are epilepsy target doses. The target for bipolar while not on Dep or T is 200mg. Your 450mg sounds like a lot. Prescribing Info
spaceman
would adding low dose lithium possibly help. low enough of a dose as to not cause major side effects such as weight gain. Are there any studies or research on this? if so where could I find some info. I know it seems like i'm grasping for straws here because i am. I don't know how any body else feels but i would be more depressed if i gained alot of weight as i have enough self image problems as it is now. I know noone on here is a dr. so all I am asking for is opinions . Anyone on low doses of lithium? i know i saw one person on 600mg along with other things. If you are one of those people I am very curious about your experiences. Thanx
tamagotchi
If you have not tried lithium it could be worth a try. Talk to your pdoc and see what he/she thinks. When I added lithium to my Lamictal, it had a positive effect even at a low dose, although I'm up to a more normal dose now. Lithium does not necessarily cause weight gain. I have lost weight on lithium because I have been much more stable. As with any side effect you won't know until you try.
rowen
Lamictal/Lithium isn't an uncommon combo. If it works for you, it will be a nice anti-depressant/anti-manic balance for you. Lithium works well for depression but helps mania. Lamictal helps depression and doesn't always antagonize mania. FWIW, a lot of people on here have gained more of the water weight deal on Lithium. Drink lots of water, and it should help with water weight.
mcjimjam
Wow I had no idea you could take that much! I thought if you were on no other A/Cs the max was 200mg.
