Canadian Crazies Can't Enter America

Recommended Posts

Read it Here!!

It doesn't matter that this has only happened to a dozen people or so. What if, for example, the police came here because we were sheltering a run-away (it's happened)? Does that mean that the police having been here makes it a problem to cross the border - does any incident with the cops qualify? Let alone the whole "have mental illness, can't cross border" problem.

How bizarre.

I actually attempted suicide while in the US (on a student visa), had cops come to my home and all, but border control had no problems with me re-entering the country a few months later. I would hope that they had no knowledge of that event at all. Canadian cops ought to reconsider what information they put into their database and share with foreign countries...

As far as I'm concerned almost all of the supposed security measures enacted since 9/11 have been horrendous violations of civil rights. Privacy was the first to go.

But I have to say, this isn't, if I'm understanding it correctly, an issue about mental health specifically, or about med records being shared, as it is about police records being shared. I'm not at all saying that's a good thing. But it's not quite so draconian as just banning people with MI, or somehow accessing medical records. I don't know that it's even necessarily uncommon for governments to share such records when it comes to immigration.

No, it isn't just MI specific. It's anyone who has had an encounter with the cops, potentially. Which expands the pool even more!

Also, this is not just about immigration (although to be able to enter once being unable you need to be up at the immigration-worth level) but even just to visit. For, say, the day. Or a wedding. Or a job conference.

That just makes me want to stay in Canada. I have no intents on looking for a job in the US.

I've been pulled over by police twice, ticketed once, given a warning the second time (traffic, the first is off my record, I was 17, the second was just ridiculous!)

I had the police at my house after I left a hospital where they had involuntarily admitted me without telling me. Security kicked me out (kinda, she said "if keep doing stuff you aren't doing (I was apparently banging the walls.. I was drumming with my fingers, I used to play drums, its a habit I don't notice!) I'll escort you out" and I said "I'll escort myself out!" and drove home) The cops showed up, questioned me, they were pissed at the security guard (I gave them a description and name) and said hospital security sucks, have a nice day, nice dog! and left.

I've crossed after 9/11 and bought cigarettes (and candy) and had no problems, even with the smokes. My brother goes over once a month, my dad (who has BPD) had a job where he crossed the border several times a day, his meds on him.
