ishy
I am in the process of switching doctors and getting a second opinion on my diagnosis. My GP in the meantime has prescribed me 10mg of Citalopram. But I have suspected mania too (but we're not sure about it). Am I safe to take it? tryp
It depends on what you mean by safe. If you have a history of mania, is it possible that taking it will flip you up? Yes, it's possible. But it's also possible that it might be very helpful for you. You have to balance the risks and benefits. If you feel that you can hold out until your second opinion and you are truly worried, you might decide not to take it. If you are desperately depressed and willing to take the risk, then maybe take it. Honestly there's no way of predicting, especially if it's unclear whether you're BP or have a history of mania. Did you discuss this question with your doctor when you were prescribed the medication? If not, perhaps you could call them and get their thoughts on the risk. ishy
Thank you tryp Well I have taken antidepressant called Seroxat in the past with no mania so I assume it will be okay to take it?
tryp
That is certainly one good indicator. I took Celexa and I had some increased agitation/irritability/anxiety, but it was only Zoloft that really gave me a full on mixed state, so people can react to the SSRIs differently. But is is one indicator. Also, the dose of Celexa is quite small. If it were me, I would probably take it, be alert for signs of mania, and be ready to stop it and/or call for help as soon as anything comes up. But that's just me. In the end, you have to decide which risk is easier for you to live with - not being medicated for a while or risking mania.
Sixstringkate
I took it for almost 3 years, but for GAD and panic attacks. I liked it fine, but (and this is still a huge debate) they now say it can cause cleft lip and palate if you get pregnant while on it. That is, of course, if you're a lady. All I know is, my Drs said it was fine, and my son was born with a cleft. Other than that, it never gave me any trouble until it pooped out.
