mynameisiforgot
I'm starting on Abilify as of tomorrow morning and I want to know if anyone else has tried it and what they thought of the drug? Does it trigger Tardive Dyskinesia? I'm worried it might trigger my TD coming back. I'm starting on 15mg.
Guest Vapourware
When I first started on Abilify, I also started on 15mg. Personally, if I could do it over again, I would've started on a lower dose. 15mg gave me some pretty nasty akathesia, which went away when I went down to 7.5mg. I also found Abilify to be rather sedating, so I used to take it at night. Once I went down to 7.5mg and then raised my dosage again, I didn't develop akathesia. Abilify worked for a few months, then just failed. I got up to about 22.5mg but it was doing squat for my psychotic symptoms [i was getting ideas of reference], so my pdoc recommended that I pull the plug. As for whether it would cause TD for you...that's hard to say. Like all APs, there's a possibility but whether or not you actually develop it depends on your body's reaction to it, really. saveyoursanity
Starting on 15mg seems a little high to me, unless you're experiencing full blown symptoms. I started on 2mg, had akathisia when I titrated up to 5mg, went back down to 2mg for another 2 weeks, then titrated up to 5mg and have stayed there. Granted I'm not taking it for schizophrenia, which might explain the low dose, but even at this dose it has helped a great deal with my anxiety and obsessive rumination. confused
I think it's working well for me. I take 20mg with no side effects and my psychotic symptoms have stopped. I've been on as high as 30mg. I don't remember titrating up-I think I just started at this dosage.

My pdoc said it wouldn't be sedating at all and that he recommended I take it of a morning, he didn't mention anything about TD but I did a little research and found it can be triggered by the drug it just scared me so I had to ask someone. Starting on 15mg seems a little high to me, unless you're experiencing full blown symptoms. I am pretty much, i'm having a really hard time at the moment with my Psychotic symptoms and my paranoia (as they call it) is pretty high I just hope this drug works. crazynotstupid
It can be sedating, but the first tiome I took it, I had no sedation til I hit 30 mg. YMMV. As far as TD/akathesia I never had any probs, though I wasn't on it for a terribly long time last time. We'll see how long I go this time and what dose I end up at... Anna
Actually, I am thinking that the dose for BP is LESS than that for schiz. It's for augmentation of ADs that it is used really low dose. Or I could be confusing that with saphris, but I don't think so. Anna
Guest Vapourware
The pdoc who prescribed Abilify for me also mentioned that it could be activating, so he also recommended that I take it in the morning. Which I did. I rocked up at my social work placement all spaced out, then by lunchtime realised I couldn't go on for much longer, so I went home and collapsed for a few hours. I took Abilify in the morning a few more days and found myself needing naps in the car, so I decided it was time to switch to night dosage. Once I switched to night dosage, it gave me a good night's sleep. However, Abilify may vary you on. It's best to try it out during the day to see if it is sedating for you, because IMO it's not a drama to switch the dosing to night if required. mynameisiforgot
I've caught myself trying to nap during the day since starting on the Abilify, but i've also been having sleeping troubles so i'm not sure if it's the Abilify causing me to take naps or my lack of sleep of a night time. I'm going to discuss it with my pdoc when I see him next.
daisy131864
i am on abilify and take it at night. for me, it gives me better sleep. when i took it in the morning at lower doses, it was more activating, but i find as i titrate up it is definitely more sedating. that could also be that i'm taking it with mega doses of xanax for my anxiety and vybriid as well. clownfish
Hi I was on 30 mgs of abilify(any lower didn't work and I took seroquel at the same time) and I found it to be activating rather than sedating. It gave me terrible akathesia (my legs moved like Elvis) so I'm now trying Invega. Just looking at the varition in answers to your question makes one realise that it can't be predicted what reaction you'll have to a medication. You just have to try it and see what happens.
