any ADs good for weight loss?

Recommended Posts

I was wanting to know if there are any good anti depressants that help with weight loss?

I was wondering if i went on a antidepressant that caused weight loss then it might help with the weight gain i got/get from Zypera/Olanzapine. Is this true?

I am depressed at the moment so need a antidepressant anyway, thought i would kill two birds with one stone

Wellbutrin has been trialed for weight loss on its own (better than placebo) and is currently being trialed for weight loss in combinations with some other meds, so that is probably the most obvious option. Effexor (and probably the other SNRIs) also has a net weight loss effect, but I think your chances here are smaller than with Wellbutrin. (Neither has done anything for me, sadly.)

If you can find a med combo that gives you basic stability, then you'll be able to set up an eating plan and a fitness schedule that will definitely help you yo lose weight. Some AD's can help aid weight loss but the only scientifically proved way to lose that kind of weight is to diet and exercise.

I do think WB is your best bet here, but it is by no means guaranteed that you will lose weight.

Agree on the low carb thing with the zyprexa. Additionally, unless it is the ONLY AAP that keeps you remotely stable, there are other AAPs that are more weight neutral (or slightly) than zyprexa. You might also try the zydis formulation of zyprexa, some people find the weight gain is more manageable when using that.

You're in Australia, no? Wellbutrin in Australia is called Zyban, and it's on the PBS as a smoking cessation agent. If you were to buy it off-label, it would be $73.09 per packet.

Personally I did well with ziprasidone/Geodon/Zeldox/insert ridiculous name - it helped with both my psychotic and mood issues, and was also weight neutral. In fact, I think my appetite decreased while I was on it.

I know the feeling. I was on Weight Watchers and doing really well until the depression hit. Then the whole healthy habits thing kinda fell by the wayside. I'm not really settled on it yet, and I can't tell if I like it or not (scratch that - so far, I HATE it.) but Effexor has really killed my appetite. It's also given me tremors, made me super forgetful, and affected my blood sugar levels. So I don't feel like eating, I forget I haven't eaten, then I have a super bad, shaky crash because I didn't eat all day! I had to set a freaking alarm in my phone, just so I remember to have meals! But, despite reverting back to poor eating habits, I'm not gaining. Not loosing either, but I'll take it.

I would think that once you get stable and get over that depression, it will be easier for you to lose weight. I think that your number one goal should be to get stable and for now not to worry about weight gain unless it is a tremendous weight gain and then you may have to look into other AAP's.
