spaceman
What causes the weight gain with abiliify? Is it the overeating or something else with the drug. Someone stated that it is hard to lose the weight that is gained. Why is that? Is it still from overeating? My pdoc said she would add in some topomax to help out with the weight gain. Would that help? Is it a good idea? At what level does the appetite suppressant effect start?
jt07
I noticed an appetite increase with Abilify - more so than I had with risperidone.
Anna
Abilify isn't known for causing huge weight changes in SOME people, though it's an AAP, so it definitely can. No one is exactly sure how and why AAPs mess you up, it seems to be some metabolic issues coupled with appetite increasing issues that cause the change. In other words, it can both make you hungrier, AND cause you to change the way your body processes things leading to more weight gain. That said, abilify is considered ONE of the more weight neutral AAPS. Just not for everybody. Topamax, IMHO is not the greatest idea solely for weight control. It can jack with your moods. It can REALLY jack with your cognitive function. Finding the "right" dose where you feel "normal" is kind of a craphshoot, and takes time. It comes with quite a few side effects. To top it of, not everyone gets the weight loss side effect anyway. I'd never use topa for this purpose. You do have other options. Some studies suggest that glucophage can stop AAP weight, which is generic med for diabetes which has been around forever. This may or may not be true/possible the studies were not THAT robust. But for some folks, it does seem to work. Keep in mind you will likely have some gastric upset at first. The best way to deal with AAPs is a diet low in carbs and via exercise.
