How much exercise do you need to combat weight gain?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone had any success controlling weight on the weight gain meds like zyprexa, clozaril, risperdal, seroquel etc If so how did you do it? How much exercise is needed to control weight when on these meds? Also even if you exercise and have weight controlled can you still get diabetes and high cholesterol? Cause i'm also worried about the blood lipids being effected. I was on latuda for 6 months and it took my blood lipids from high to normal. But i've been having some racing thought issues that zyprexa seems to fix right away. So ive been taking that for a few days but last time I took it mixed with invega 9 mg my blood lipids rose to dangerous levels. I really would like to stay on zyprexa since it helps my mental problems and i'm willing to do what it takes to not get diabetes or high cholesterol. I just don't know how much exercise/ diet I need to do.

I've read recently that five hours a week should sustain a weight loss, and that's moderate to high intensity cardio (movement that gets your heart rate raised, like dancing, running, brisk walking, swimming, jogging, rowing, fast housework, intensive gardening). I hear that cardio is best combined with something that gives your muscles some resistance, like weight training.

That being said, anything is better than nothing and it is best to work up those five hours.

With Zyprexa, I would focus more on raising HDL levels with diet personally. Exercise is good, don't get me wrong, but I tend not to gain on meds at all.. and I gained about 20lbs in a month on Zyprexa. It was crazy. I didn't raise my activity levels, but still.. I didn't do that on anything else either. Going with the assumption that your LDL will spike in spite of activity and planning accordingly to offset it as much as possible makes sense to me.
