ManWitPlan
This didn't happen everytime I took latuda which I have been on since march. But I stopped lamictal last month and around 2 weeks ago I tried to take latuda earlier in the day around 4 pm. 90 minutes later I got into this dysphoric state with these symptoms: racing thoughts,Psychomotor restlessness, suicidal ideation, persecutory delusions, indecisiveness, guilty ruminations, freefloating anxiety. I would take symbyax and it would go away within an hour. I never had this problem till 2 weeks ago when I took it at 4 pm. Now it has happened 5 times since then. I never want to experience it again yet not sure what to do. I'll give my doctor a call tomorrow but i'm wondering for now if you guys think antipsychotics can cause this symptom? hallowedink
So far as I know, AAPs have been known to cause mania or mixed state. I think there's a thread on that in the AP forum. However, I'm not sure, because I'm not bipolar, so have no experience with that. I'm sure someone who knows more about the subject will come along soon and help you out. SashaSue
The only AAP's I can think of having caused mania are abilify and maybe geodon. Latuda is still really new though, so I guess it's possible. Definitely call your pdoc about this.
AnneMarie
Geodon made me mixed-manic. In my experience, Latuda is a pretty activating AAP like Abilify and Geodon. If taken without a stronger antimanic, I could see that it could cause some problems. Also, keep in mind that it's not approved for bipolar. And, it's only in testing for bipolar depression, not mania.
Anna
L. is considered one of the more activating AAPs as far as I know and hasn't really been tested for use in BP, so I'd think it is certainly possible. Could also be related to stopping other meds and w/d however.... so it's hard to say for sure. But I wouldn't rule it out, and I wouldn't personally be trying it to control mania, myself. I wonder if there is a connection between causing mania and the med not causing weight gain.. If so that sucks that a lot can't use the anti psychotics that don't cause weight gain cause of this. Risperdal did not cause me to gain weight. Abilify has increased my appetite so I'm guessing that I gained some weight even though I've really only been on it for a month. I'm wondering if that has anything to do with your illness compared to say a bipolar or schizophrenic.
Anna
I don't think AAP weight gain is diagnosis dependent, I think it is particular body chemistry dependent. That, and what you eat and how much you exercise, and genetics, probably. Risperdal does not make me gain weight either..... compared to some of the other ones.
