Urinary Incontinence and anti-psychotics

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

So I went to see my primary doctor the other day because I have a problem peeing where I cant hold my pee in long enough and I have frequent accidents. I am 19 years old.

He said that it could be a side effect of the psych meds that I am on, so I am curious if anyone else has this problem of urinary incontinence while taking an anti-psychotic or other psych meds.

Thanks for any words of advice.

i have experienced this as a side effect of clonazepam. sorry you've got this happening too, it can be really embarrassing! if i have to go out in public, i find myself preemptively going to the bathroom "just in case" constantly. i blame it on age (though i'm not old enough to do that, my friends are mostly too young to know the difference heh).

if it's happening very frequently, or through the night, i'd be looking for some alternatives (i remember it interfering with my job, even). maybe trying a different AAP, or if you're pdoc is really adventurous, some folks take amitryptaline or nortryptaline (spelling?), which can sometimes let you hold your bladder forever (tried it, it really does work, but since they're tricyclics they aren't for everyone). but that's just one alternative.

there's some good info here about different causes and treatments. i hope you and your doc can resolve this quickly.

This happened me one time but I believe it was because I was so heavily sedated that I was confused and disorientated. I was incontinent during the night over several nights because I couldn't figure out how to get to the bathroom. I was on a high dose of the sleeping medication Dalmane (flurazepam) as well as valium and Seroquel amongst other medications as I was going through a manic episode so I blame the combination of those drugs. I was fine during the day so I'd say Dalmane was the main culprit.

The excess weight gain from AA's can also stress the muscles responsible for urinary control and cause some stress incontinence. That can be remedied by losing weight, it's not permanent.

  • 1 month later...

I have had a big problem with incontinence and my pdoc suggested a switch from Abilify to Seroquel. Apparently, most of the AAP meds have incontinence as a side effect, except for Seroquel. It is still an experiment at this point, but my incontinence has improved noticeably. I have been told it will take 2-3 months or more to see the full effect, as it will take that long for Abilify to clear my system completely. I hope that helps.

I had the paradoxical effect of having a really hard time voiding my bladder on Geodon and Buspar. So even though I had the opposite effect, it clearly correlated with certain meds. I usually have to go to pee all the time, because I have a spastic bladder (no, really, that's the diagnosis, I know it sounds like I made that up). It is really frustrating constantly having the urge to pee, and having it take a year and a half to squeeze anything out.

What worked for me was increasing my congentin. My pdoc said that for some of her patients it made them retain their urine. Lo and behold it allowed me to hold my urine for a reasonable amount of time so I wouldn't have an accident.

I also drink like 5 litres of water a day so that didn't help it out at all. But everything is basically solved on my end.

I have the opposite problem that you do... The different combinations of psych meds that I have been on and my diabetes have killed my bladder muscle and now I am self cathing a couple times a day when I can't use my abdominal muscles to urinate. Feel fortunate there is medication changes to correct your problem or ways to correct the incontinence.. I'm stuck, mine is irreversable.... good luck and I hope this is resolved for you.
