Guest Angie,

Welcome. If and when you are comfortable, I would invite you to register as a member.  You can still stay anonymous.

Please understand that we are not doctors and cannot do diagnosis, and we cannot recommend medications.

What is mhmr?

That said, having homicidal thoughts about your beloved child is a very serious condition, and does not sound like a personality disorder like Borderline Personality Disorder, but rather an organic mental illness.

Your situation sounds serious and you should be seeing a board certified Psychiatrist who can properly diagnose your illness. Once you have been diagnosed you should expect to be prescribed medications that will control your dangerous thoughts and allow you to enjoy your family again.

Be safe, and please see a Pdoc.

;)   in 2002 i went to a weight dr and he gave me phentermine. i told him i was taking paxil he said those two meds would be ok. well i had a horrible reaction. i started having thoughts of hurting my youngest son but i have 3 other children. the thought came to him. i dont know why. i love him so much. i was able to control the thoughts. i let him live with my mother.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

It sounds to me like you made a wise decision there. Heaven knows it hurts to want to be with and

take care of the ones you love but to know you can't, even if it's only temporary.  Is it possible to

let him live with your mother for a while until things are sorted out again, or have you already

done this?

well i went to mhmr and they put me on 50mg of zoloft. well it helped for about 2 years and then it stopped. i went to psych and he put me on risperdal 1mg and 37.5 mg for a week then 75mg. the 75mg made my bp go up and the risperdal made me have bad nightmares and headaches at night.

well my insurance went out so i had to switch dr the dr i go to now put me lexapro and seroquel. the seroquel works fine but the lexapro makes me have mood swings. so im at a point to get rid of those horrible thoughts. i love him so much. mhmr diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. but i dont think so. are there any suggestions for me. i need to do some research.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

It sounds like your psych is trying to get you back to being close to a combination that had mostly

worked, nightmares and all, with medications he's allowed to subscribe by the county. Some of the

reactions to the Lexapro remind me of what some of the folks with bipolar (and similar situations)

have dealt with.  If you would be interested in learning more about what *could* be going on

you could ask in the bipolar spectrum board if this sounds familiar, or we could move this discussion

over there.

Since I'm no doctor I really can't tell what has been causing all this pain for you. But I DO know that

any time you are dealing with mood swings that are that hard to control you really, really need to

insist on seeing a doctor - specifically a psychiatrist, as Air Marshall saye - as soon as possible

and discuss all the possibilities and treatment options.

my son is still staying at my moms. i dont have those thoughts like i use to. i am able to control those thoughts. mhmr evaluated me and said they could not see me because they think i have a borderline personality disorder, everyone i have talked to say they are surprised of their decision i even appealed it and they still said no. i guess because i told them i am able to control the thoughts. this is really pitiful. i was going to a dr in temple and he was taking medicaid. then my medicaid stopped. so i will have to pay $80.00 each visit. i will have to do that but it will put a strain on me because im living the poverty level. the med dr so far is giving me effexor xr 37.5 mg and 100 mg of seroquel.  i really appreciate you trying to find answers for me thanks

I think it is difficult to evaluate your condition - for a dr let alone for anyone here.

Your harmful thoughts could be a number of things.  You mention you have control over them. Do you really?

Do you hear voices or do you get nasty "noise" in your head?

It possible what you are experiencing is some kind of obsessional disorder.

Regardless, it sounds like the medical treatment is barking up the right alley.  Effexor is a strong anti-depressant and seroquel is good for treating obsessions, delusions, hallucinations, psychosis etc etc - it treats a lot of things.

At a guess you may feel better on higher doses of seroquel and/or effexor.  You need to discuss these options with your dr.

I personally am on 900mg/seroquel/day for OCD/psychotic depression, and I find it works very well for me at least.

On the CrazyMeds Site there's a link to some information on

klonopin. Basically, if it was prescribed to prevent seizures AND if you stop taking it too fast, there's

a heavy seizure risk There may be a potential risk if you stop it cold - which you really don't want to do -

but otherwise I wouldn't worry about it much.

By the way, most of the side effects should be listed on the PI (patient information) sheet already.

The CrazyMeds site also has a page on reading those more effectively.

As to weight gain - have you ever noticed that all the good stuff in life is either illegal, immoral, or

fattening?  If you are worried you might gain weight, it might help to add (more?) exercise to your

routine. Not that *I'm* any good at following that advice, but it is easier than diets and it usually

helps keep things together.

Weight gain is a side effect seen in a few meds, and i'm on 2 (seroquel, valproate).  Forget about that and get stable, then start worrying about the chubb.  Buy a snack that you like that is basically calorie free.  By this i mean a lot of fruit and veggies.  I eat tons of granny smith apples, cheap and yummy.  As well, try to cut back on empty calories like fruit juice, candy, desserts,  I know, so obvious, but it will go a long way.  Exercise is a rough one since it's tough with depression (and your a parent, i'm assuming you've not got a lot of time).  The more you can exercise, the more i find you amazing.

Many side effects will appear with meds but some will probably go away.  I think every med gives me dry mouth.  I buy sugar free gum.  Other than that, med symptoms are pretty variable.  Reading up on each at crazymeds.us should give you a pretty good idea of what to expect and what to watch out for.

We all react to meds differently and some of us get side effects, some don't, people may get one side effect and not another.

Others have offered good advice. I will just add that I have taken klonopin on and off for years and I have never had weight gain as a side effect. Perhaps weight gain could be a side effect if klonopin makes you sleepy/drowsy and you don't have much energy to move around at all, who knows?

If klonopin does make you sleepy during the day, you might want to ask your pdoc about taking the entire dose at bedtime. Klonopin has a very long half-life and it is possible for some people to take the med at bedtime and still have the effects last througout the next day.

I take 1mg twice a day. One dose in the afternoon, which does not make me drowsy, and the other at bedtime.

Chand,

I'm glad to hear that you're doing better with the seroquel and klonopin. If you're feeling depressed as well, you really need to talk with your doctor about it. It could be related to the other medications, or it could be that the meds have soothed the worst of your symptoms enough to unmask an underlying depression. The point is, we don't know and can't tell you what to do. Please talk to your doc.

Darnit lost my first reply.  @#$^^

Amytriptaline (Elavil) is a TriCyclic Anti-depressant.  One of the old school and first true anti-depressants, I think it was also used as an anti-psychotic before there were specific AP drugs.

It is a tried and true med, well understood, and cheap.  It is somewhat more sedating than the latest drugs, but that wears off after a while.  There is a small chance of extrapyramidal effects like shaky hands. I had the side effect of not being able to tell when my bladder was full, so when I had the urge it meant right now. Solution was to go the toilet at any opportunity.

You can check out the meds write ups at www.CrazyMeds.com courtesy of Jerod.

I don't mean to discourage you from asking questions, but I hope you are making an effort to read about them for yourself.  If you still don't understand then you can ask more specific questions.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

thanks for the info but overall is this a good med for depression. the dr also suggested wellbrutrin. he wants me to try to amitriptyline for 2 weeks to see how things are going.
