When to take Ativan?

Recommended Posts

My roommate brought up a very interesting point tonight. I was telling her that I took a few Ativan and didn't like how it seems I have to take more to get any relief. She wondered if I was waiting too long to take it, and only taking it when I was really ramped up and it therefore had little effect. So, I remembered being in the hospital and my Ativan was on a schedule, morning, noon and night. I felt more stable that way, I think, and I am going to try it starting tomorrow. Any thoughts on this, or what sort of schedule you found best?

Thanks

I've been on my Xanax prn for 7+ years. Same dose/count per month. I take it as needed and dependent on the severity level. So, the mg's vary.

I've found not taking it on a regular basis to be beneficial. I do receive less of an effect from it now that I've been on it for so long.. but, when I need it, it works. And quite well.

As a result, my panic is fairly well controlled.. however, my general anxiety has increased since I'm no longer taking it all the time consistently. It's a trade off. My last pdoc offered to up the count, but I declined. True, it would be beneficial in the short term, but I'd just get used to that level too & end up right back where I am. Since they'll only let you go so high - that's not a helpful solution long-term for me.

I plan to stay at this level indefinitely.

I've been taking Ativan on a regular schedul for years. I've been up to 4mg a day (4x a day) and down to 1mg a day (1x a day) but generally take 2mg or 3mg in a day now. It's never really lost its effectiveness with me and I prefer to take it on a schedule. If I let myself get too anxious, it doesn't do much for me, or I don't want to take it.

Klonopin and Valium tend to be the benzos that are used prophylactically because they have long half lives. If having a benzo in your system to keep your baseline anxiety down is something you want to investigate, talk to your doc about it, one of those might be a better option.
