Is Clonazepam ODT faster than chewing the tablet?

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I've got a psych appointment coming up very soon. At the last appointment, my doctor wanted me to switch from Xanax 0.5 ODT up to four times a day, to Clonazepam 1mg up to three times daily. He equated that this would be a similar dosage, but that Clonazepam would last longer and without the drowsy profile.

I switched to the Clonazepam, and on his recommendation, I am actually chewing the tablet if needed for a faster onset of relief from panic. I've tried letting it dissolve and that just won't happen, so it ended up with chewing.

My dilemma is: Clonazepam is great for me for maintenance throughout the day, but the onset of the Xanax *ODT* was faster than this Clonazepam tablet can compare to.

Does anyone have experience with trying Clonazepam ODT? My doctor doesn't expect that the onset will be much faster than chewing a Clonazepam tablet, but I know that Xanax ODT is faster for me than regular Xanax.

Opinions? I couldn't find much information about the ODT Clonazepam.

Thanks!

I always let my clonazepam dissolve under my tongue. It only takes a minute or so (can't imagine the ODT being much faster) and it works much faster than swallowing (maybe 20 minutes vs. 45?). My brain is trained to know that relief is coming, so I feel better as soon as I take it-- though I know the real effects take longer to appear. Just smelling them triggers me to calm.

Thanks for your response. I'll update this thread by saying that my psych switched me to the ODT form last week. It's great because I don't have to worry about the tablet not dissolving for one thing, pieces of the med don't get chewed on and in my teeth, and it does feel like it acts at least as fast as chewing the tablet. Perhaps I've used different generic brands, because I could never get the tablets to dissolve under the tongue.

I've always used the generic clonazepam (small round yellow) and it dissolves really fast. I guess that is subjective, but it gets mushy within a minute and totally dissolves right after that. My time sense isn't great, but it does seem that fast.

My pdoc gave me the go ahead to use it sublingually and said that it is made to be used that way in addition to being swallowed whole. Almost eight years in, and I don't see much of a reason to change to anything faster acting. I do have the lorazepam which I guess takes full effect more quickly, though I prefer the clon.
