Seroquel for depression, sexual side effects

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am a new member and this is my first post.

My psychiatrist is considering augmenting my Wellbutrin with Seroquel XR at a low dose, say 150, for my depression. Has anyone here found it to be effective for depression? Also, has anyone experienced sexual side effects from Seroquel? I would prefer to avoid the SSRIs for that reason.

Hey, welcome to CB.

I take Seroquel (not the XR version though). Initially, I started taking it for my BPD, because I was going batshit. I found that it not only calmed me down a lot, but it also lifted my depression substantially when I first started taking it. Unfortunately, that effect seems to have lessened - or more likely my depression got worse, so it's not having such an anti-depressant effect. I haven't experienced any sexual side effects.

Obviously, meds work differently for different people, and that's just my experience. However, if your doctor thinks you could benefit from it, I'd trust him, because he knows your med history and your symptoms. Nevertheless, I do think that Seroquel is good for depression, and I know that a lot of people here on CB like Seroquel very much.

In the end, I would say just try it. After all, you can always come off it if the side effects aren't tolerable, but if you don't try it you'll never know if it might work.

I was put on Serq, it's the IR not the XR, back in June or maybe it was July, anyway.....

I love my Serq! Like hallowedink, it helped my depression tremendously. I was also surprised when my anxiety was all gone too! I'll say it a million times over, Serq. saved my life! I was pregnant, stressed to the max, in a mixed up messie episode and had already been in the hospital. It was a relief after 10 years of being on and off the wrong meds to finally find something that worked, at least for awhile.

I take Seroquel XR 400mg for Bipolar Disorder and it has REALLY helped my depression which would be my main problem. It's also been fantastic for helping my insomia, anxiety and mania. Hasn't caused me to have any sexual side effects either.

When I was prescribed Wellbutrin, my pdoc prescribed Seroquel at the same time. He told me that Wellbutrin can cause or increase anxiety, and the Seroquel (being a mood stabilizer) was supposed to help. Also I have chronic, lifelong insomnia and the Seroquel was great for that.

I've been on Seroquel for a few years, both with SSRI's and without. Without meant: "Oh! THAT'S what sex drive and climax feels like!" So no sexual side effects.

Now I'm on a small dose of 100 mg. which I take with Ambien before bed. It's mainly for sleep, since I'm taking other mood stabilizers and AD's.

I'm on a teeny tiny dosage (25 mg) of Seroquel XR for sleep and to help my depression slightly. I've only been on it for about a week, so I don't really know... But thus far, no sexual side effects. I looked it up, and it seems like very few people experience sexual side effects...

i guess i'm one of the rare folks who do get sexual side effects from seroquel. i've been on it six months and have had no sex drive at ALL. i've tried a lot of meds, and this is a first for me. i just restarted wellbutrin and hopefully that'll help :)

Thanks for the responses. It sounds like Seroquel is worth trying.

I actually just began Celexa with my Wellbutrin, but I don't foresee a bright future for the Celexa. I've only been on it a week, but I already know that the sexual side effects will be a problem. I have been on several SSRIs and had intolerable sexual side effects on all. My pdoc and I were hoping the Celexa might be different.

The Celexa also has left me feeling emotionally numb and seemingly more depressed, more so than the other SSRIs. I know these side effects usually go away with time, but the sexual side effects do not subside. But -- I will continue with it until I see my pdoc in a few weeks, and then reassess with him at that point. Perhaps the Seroquel would be a better augmentation.
